Just interested to see how much teacher spend on their students. Between stickers, candy, holiday presents, pizza parties, I think I spend at least 50, 000 won a month on the little buggers. To make the best of it our school requires the teachers to pay for food during book parties. I feel guilty at times because other teacher on staff overdo it all the time. This makes me look bad and the students complain (blah blah teacher gives us pizza and chicken, TEACHER BAD!!) Don't get me wrong, if a class does well and tries really hard I have no problem giving them things, but when you have students who do nothing you feel like giving them nothing. Anyone else experience the same thing?

I'd say 15k a month on bulk candy...I buy the good stuff.

I think I had a pizza party 2x in 7yrs.

I also think I spent more out of my pocket when working at a hakwon then i do working at a high school - the kids don't expect much at a high school, but they do at hakwons.

My first year I probably spent 50-100k a month during the summer months. I would take every class for ice cream at least once. It was just SO hot for me to handle a classroom with no airconditioner and only a small fan.

A good teacher does not need to spend money to reward and motivate his/her students.

I don't really believe that but that's what I tell myself to justify my stinginess. Very Happy

Normally I buy a big bag of mini candies that last me a month which is about 3000k. This year however we had a special event in grade 2 so I spent some money on chocopies.

My special class after school class gets some sort of snacks as they look tired and the need a little sugar to keep them awake and altert (at least temporarily).

I agree about spending more at the hogwons than at a regualr school.

I used to spend quite lot on them when they first got here but I found that they just got greedier and greedier and it was expected that I buy stuff for them.

Nowadays I won't buy anything and if I do I keep it secret and give to the good kids under the table.

Explain to the kids that your co-workers are bad teachers. "X teacher has food parties all the time because he/she's too lazy to actually teach. So, do you want to stay in this class, and learn English and go to Seoul National University, or do you want to go to X teacher's class and learn nothing, and work at Mr. Pizza for the rest of your life?"

Being kids, they'll probably all pick the pizza, but it'll make you feel better, especially if your co-worker overhears.

No way. $0 - Once you start buying them stuff you can't stop and they will drive you crazy. Never give them any food or treats or else every time you walk into a room you'll hear kids screaming "teacher! Candy, teacher, treat, teacher I'm hungry! Give me food teacher!"

I made that mistake years ago.

Also, no games, ever! My life is so much easier these days.

I use candy to overcome my biggest hurdle which is to getting kids to talk as they tend to clam up at the thought of being called on infront of 40+ of the peers, the korean teacher and me. Esp. in the first year classes where they are so nervous. However I have used classical conditioning to almost get them to the point where they never know when there will be candy so they always put their hands up on the chance that there might be candy. However knowing mine and the korean teachers birthday is a candy question that gets asked every so often and always results in candy for the boy who answers it properly.

Nothing, Zip, nada. But if they're really good I get them to mop down the classroom, empty the trash, and straighten the desks.
