My Korean salary of 2.4mil translates to 1,300 pounds. With say 350k for housing, let's make it 1450 pounds. Heck 1500 pounds, say.
A 260k yen salary as advertised by james school and others under current exchange rates translates to a whopping 2,150 pounds a month.
Bloody hell, you could save a grand GBP a month, as aopposed to the 500 - 700 quid a month in Korea...

The downside is that you'll have to pay your own housing, taxes, insurance, key money, deposit, landlord and realtor fees, the food and luxury items are 150% more expensive than Korea, cell phone and internet cost more, subways and taxis are at least 5x as expensive on average, and entertainment options are much more costly.
Just a thought. Most people living there I know there bag maybe 700 USD living a modest lifestyle, though they like it more than Korea for a variety or reasons, not including: A culture more open to foreigners, a culture that's more vibrant and interesting than Korea, much cleaner and less polluted, better infrastructure and organization, and more options for having fun.
Basically you're paying more to live in a better/more satisfying/sane place. That's about it. |

Yes about 700 has salways been the norm, but due to current exchange rates over the past 6 months or so, it would now be at least comparative to Korea, ie 1mil won eqvt saved or more per month. |

You make more money in Japan, but you spend more as well. That's how Korea got people to come here instead of Japan in the first place, offering more money. They knew that if all things were the same, given the choice, people would flock to Japan instead.
Anyways, I give up. I'm going to Japan next year. I so tired of it here. Korea has sucked the life right out of me. |

No, you see I KNOW this already.
I am saying it is purely due to current exchange rates that at the moment you will earn more in Japan than Korea, regardless of cost of livin and rent etc.
I have done all the calcultions and my 2,4mil salary plus rent is worth 1500gbp here. a 260,000 yen salary is worth 2,150 gbp rigth NOW.
Dudes, that is a 1.3mil won difference! Take out 300k for rent. 1,000,000 won difference.
That equals at leas the same bankable each month in either country.
I'm telling you, the exchange rates for yen are sick at the moment! |

I hear what you're saying. I was considering that if my prospects for getting back to Korea fall through. In fact, even if I do go to Korea this spring, I may still consider going back to Japan in a year or so via JET, since my probationary period since my last stint there is almost up. If the rates are still good...
'Cause, yeah, my salary then was equal to about US 2k/mo, but now that same salary is closer to 3k/mo.
The thing that kinda changed my interest was talking with people who are still in Japan saying that while youre actually living there salaries of 250k-260k yen arent much to live on when youre paying rent and taxes.
Still, Im not sure they were looking at the short term and moving their money back to home countries. I think anyone who has finished their contracts in Japan within the last two years and moved their money back home have found they have quite a chunk of change. |

The temptations in a place like Tokyo are hard to resist, 'tho, everything from food to cool gadgets to righteous hangouts with trippy music to killer threads...and then you meet a chick who takes you over the moon, and you know you wanna treat her right ...
Better to relocate to a town sorta outta the way, if saving money's your game...(sigh)...Japan was quite the experience... |

Maybe you should take a look at this article:

I also thought about going to Japan to teach, but with the close of NOVA and GEOS, that dumped a huge glut of about 10, 000 teachers out into the market. That, combined with the international economic slump, Japanese have tightened their purse strings even tighter for language lessons.
The positive effect of all that is that there are feewer backpackers and short-termers rolling off the plane looking for work and those who lost jobs at NOVA and GEOS slowly funnel out of the country either back home or off to China or Korea.
Still, there is much more competition than there are jobs in Japan. But if you can get a good salary in Japan, yes, it beats any of the EFL jobs in Korea. Do the math, people in Japan earing Y350, 000 ~ Y400, 000 are in a much better position financially than any of us here in Korea earning 2.2 million won a month - even if they are paying rent in Japan!
Japan is a lot harder to get into than here, but if one can succeed in getting a job there it can be a lot more lucrative than Korea and an easier more interesting place to live than here. |

Great post, I'm With You, but one thing to note is that the demand for English lessons in Japan is now on the increase. The strong yen means Japan is turning into an economy that will do more international trade. Did you know that sales of the English Rosetta Stone are skyrocketing in Japan? I think the ESL market is improving there and is set to improve further. English is not only a very valuable language to know, but one that is becoming increasingly valuable in today's society. |

And for the right candidate, Japan will be great. The OP however, is not that person and Japan may offer some short-term gains, but in the end, a loser is a loser. Wendy's or some hagwon in Korea or Japan....no difference at all. Unskilled labor is always just that. |

No way meng, I learned a lot at Wendy's that I never knew before: stock control; customer service; cleaning; personal hygeine. Hell one of my co-workers 'raven' was ex secret services and taught me a lot about the truth behind what goes on in the whitehouse and how to make pipe bombs and stuff like that. I probably know more about the world than you ever will from your ivey tower. Also everytime I've been to Japan girls have been all over me telling me I'm Brad Pitt, so get over it Elephant Man. |

The people earning that kind of money are likely to have more qualifications than a B.A and speaking English though.
Y 250-270,000 seems to be the range for those with just the above qualifications. |
