OK, anyone done this? I am leaving this week, and I want to close my cell account and get my deposit back. Can I go to any SK store, or does it need to be a main branch/service center? Anyone know?

Try the main branch. The mom and pop SK Stores are going to laugh at you if you ask them for 200,000w.

I never experienced seeing a mom and pop store for SK phone service. Instead there were these service centers around subway stations. I went to one, told them I was leaving for good and instead of getting a deposit I paid my final bill in cash. It was immediately cut off from working, so you don't get any extra days. Perhaps you can get a SIM card during your final days. I waited till the last minute (day before my flight), you don't want to do that Razz

One of the branch offices of SKT is the place you should go.
Some phone shops under SKT banner are authorised to do such paperwork as well, some are not, it's hard to tell from their exteriors.
Name your approximate neighbourhood, and then it's possible to look up where the nearest official branch is.

Upon perusing SKT database, I'm actually surprised to find out that there is no 'branch office' of SKT in the entire city of Gwangju while I had assumed there should be at least one to cover this key city in the southwest.

Having said that, your best bet is one of the two 'directly-controlled shops(직영점)' on Chungjang-ro, across from Exit 3 of Culture Complex metro station. Upon turning into Chungjang-ro from the south end, you'll see multiple 'T-world' banners on both sides. Your target is the one next to Davich Optical Store, with a tall glass front unless they have re-modeled it.

I got told when I rang them that it's now only possible to get a refund at an official branch (apparently, that's a new rule that was only introduced in the middle of November). There's no official branch in the city I lived in so I had to go to Seoul. I did get the feeling that the people I spoke to at SK weren't actually sure about the correct policy on the matter.

I know this is for a different kind of service, but maybe they can redirect you.

No idea about Incheon but I can speak from personal experience by saying that the Yongsan branch office are open on Saturdays and it is possible to get your deposit back from them. I did it about 3/4 weeks ago. I was in and out in about 5 minutes.
