A couple of quick questions for past and present teachers.
Does the University permit adding an extra place of employment, so allowing teachers to work on one of their days off? (It advertises that classes are spread over four days)
Secondly, do they provide key money?
Cheers |

I don't know about the answers to your specific questions, but one of the main turn-offs about Suwon is that they require their foreign teachers to teach summer and winter camps (basically 30-40 hours a week for multiple weeks) for no extra money. If that is any indication of what they expect their instructors to do, I would agree with Gideon and say run and never look back. |

If that's the case OP seriously, run for the hills. |

I had an interview there a couple weeks ago and I'm still waiting for their repsonse. Messaged me last week that they were still interviewing candidates and checking on my qualifications and will get back to me in a couple days. Just out of curiosity, aside from that ridiculous summer and winter camps, what's the rest of the job/work load like? 12 hours a week over 4 days sounds pretty nice, even if you have to do 6 brutal weeks a year. Would like some more insite into the school instead of 'run for the hillssssss!' commentary. |

I interviewed with them and was offered a position on the spot. The contract specifies only a housing allowance and no key money. I was told that I would have to figure out housing on my own. I got a better contract with housing and with a higher salary. But, if you have a way of finding housing on your own then this isn't that bad. |

When did you interview? I'm not real confident they'd even offer me the job, however, at this point I figured I'd hear from them if they were not at least little interested in me. What are you qualifications? I'm still working on my masters degree and have been teaching now for 4 years, so I'm 'on the bubble' I guess. It's a little off putting that you were offered the job on the spot and I've had to wait, but, if your highly qualified, makes complete sense. |

I interviewed a while ago. I believe I have excellent qualifications. If you are still working on your masters degree I would suggest you list on your resume as a Masters Degree candidate or simply state that your Masters Degree is "in-progress" so they know you are working on it. Also list out any relevant courses you have taken that are applicable. This school was looking to hire many individuals. The contract, however, is for an E-2 not an E-1 visa. |

They just offered me a position, but only gave me 2 days to respond back to them. Would love some advice from anyone who's currently working there if possible. I'm not qualified really for any other Uni positions, so this could possibly open up something better for me in the following year until I finish my Masters program. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. |

Gosh, I can't imagine why this would be?

Oooh, well, that would make things clearer.
If you actually take this job you are handing them an engraved invitation to screw you up, down, backwards, forwards, in the mirror and while eating Christmas dinner.
But, yes, ignore everything that's been posted already. They're just offering you a 'good' job you aren't qualified to take because, you know, there's such a shortage of qualified people out there looking for Uni jobs. I look forward to your desperate posting in about 3 months begging for advice on how to escape whatever hellish environment they have waiting for you. |

Actually, I have an F-2 visa, which means I will have no issues trying to escape any job that isn't worth my time and effort. I'm not asking for people's opinions about a job they've never actually worked at and are just spewing more negativity. Posting comments like 'RUN FOR THE HILLSSSSSS' is not helpful or constructive in any way, shape, or form. I AM asking for anyone who has ACTUALLY worked at the University of Suwon and has some valuable, viable, legitimate information that they're willing to share about the work conditions. The people I met there seemed very enjoyable and pleasant to be around (both korean and foreign), and the head of the department has only been at the school for 1 semester and I'm curious to know if she's cleaning up some of the negative things I've heard about the job. |

The number one thing university selection committees look for besides a Masters Degree is experience teaching at the university level. This job will give you that experience. And soon you will have both your Masters Degree and that experience. Disregard the naysayers and the soothsayers. |

Rummor has it that at least ten senior members of staff have desided to resign, because of the current dean, and five weeks of camp per semester. |
