When I decided to go back to Korea I knew that I did NOT want to teach Kindergarden. I did it at my first hagwon and I hated it. It sucked. I hated having to be a babysitter instead of a teacher. I worked at another hagwon where I was teaching Elementary and Middle school students from 2 pm - 10 pm and was much happier with the age group and the working hours. I'm not a morning person.
I've had 3 phone interviews for afternoon positions, none of which have come through. They make excuses like "The director decided to only hire one afternoon teacher and she already hired them" or "The current foreign teacher decided to stay". I know these are just excuses and that there is probably pretty high competition for these afternoon jobs in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do.
The YBM LIA in Cheongdam, Gangnam I interviewed with for an afternoon position wants to hire me for a morning position. I am starting to be interested in it because I'd rather work Kindergarden in Seoul than work a 6 hour a day afternoon position in Gangwon-do. I lived in Chuncheon before and found it extremely boring. I lived in Guri after that and loved it.
Should I just accept this position in Gangnam and say screw the afternoon positions? Is the job market really so bad that a person with a TEFL certificate and teaching experience in Korea can't get an afternoon job in the Seoul metro area?
Let me know what you think, please. Thanks. |

It's not really for us to decide. You seem to not only be aware of the differences, but you experienced them. We can hold your hand until you sign the contract, but after that, you are on your own.
Which do you prefer? If you can't get it, can you do another year with something less than your number one choice? If you can't do another year, how will you handle it, and will you try to stay in Korea? If you can't stay in Korea, what will you do?
Think it out, where do you want to end up? I won't be throwing out any security blanket ideas in this post (and probably thread). I am trying to give you the worst possible scenario. |

I'm not in Korea. I went home and I've been home for 6 months now. I'm looking to return.
I think my main question was: is it impossible to get an afternoon position in Seoul or Gyeonggi-do now for an experienced teacher? I am willing to work 9-6 in a kindie corporate school in Gangnam (would not do this in Chuncheon EVER AGAIN but would consider it for Gangnam) if it's paying me well (which this school would be), I would just rather not take the position if i could find an afternoon job. |

Also the school is YBM LIA so there would be a Korean teacher in the class with me during the kindergarden classes and I'd have a set curriculum, two things I didn't have at my nightmare hagwon in Chuncheon. |

Not in Korea and 1700 "in Korea" NETS from public schools not being renewed and wanting / competing for the same positions in the same areas.
I know I wouldn't bet on your success in the short term (the next 6 months) in finding what you want.
