|
|
I'm thinking of running a role playing games class after school. I teach at a private middle school for boys.
I've never played any RPG myself though - except for a few weeks sitting in on a dungeons and dragons game as a kid in the 1980s. Can anyone advise me on good games to try for ESL students. The ability of our students here is above average.
Ideally I'd like something that I can buy in Korea, although I don't mind ordering from abroad. It would be nice if I could find a shop in Seoul where we can pick up extra resources though - like pieces / dice or whatever. Does anyone know of stores that sell this stuff in Seoul? Anything at the Coex? |

Not sure about coex but at the terminal building in yongsan (3rd floor - straight ahead in the right hand corner as you enter from the pedway over the tracks) you will find what you seek.
The tunnel under the nanjin arcade is another place to look (again, lots of RPG stuff).

Google "Dungeon Squad" I't a D&D style game that is really stripped down to the bare bones. Super easy mechanics and no special items needed except for dice.
And, speaking of dice, there are tons of free on-line RPGs that are based on d20, d12,d6 etc... Again, just google d6 role playing games.
I've been running RPGs as an ESL/EFL activity for years. RPGs can be great for almost any language point and just plain talking. It can be successful, you just have to keep the game action packed. Also, Koreans have a slightly different style of play. For example:
DM: You are only first level and are badly wounded. A Tyranasarus Rex is running to come eat you. You have enough time to dive into a small cave and escape. What do you do?
Correct Answer: I dive into the cave.
Korean Answer: I attack the dinosaur with my toothpick.
Eventually they figure it out. Just keep character creation simple, lol |

Thanks guys - I'll check out the places in Yongsan, and dungeon squad.
If anyone else is interested, someone over on the AFEK site gave me this link too:

It's a Steve jackson thing, with Korean and English instructions, which could be useful.
Toadkiller - I've never really played RPGs before - do you have any other advice on being the GM / DM? You've got to prepare a whole narrative before the game right?
I'm checking out google videos at the moment - seems to be some stuff available. It's a bit scary though: all these unshaven men, who play RPGs in basement rooms in their mom's houses. Suddenly I'm wondering what I'm getting myself into here, and worrying that doing PRGs as an ESL activity make me become like them. I mean, I only had the idea yesterday, and already here I am - on a Thursday morning at work - and watching videos of single white men, who dress in strange clothes and lead solitary lifestyles.
I'm slightly concerned that sometime in the not-too-distant future I might find myself dressed up as a dwarf at a gaming convention somewhere at the back of beyond and wondering what happened to my career, marriage and self-respect. Is there any real danger of this happening? Are role playing games the thin end of the wedge? I think I can handle them, and just use them recreationally, but suddenly, this morning, I am beset by doubts.

Strangely, I found this video of a D&D game with a map of south korea on the wall behind the players:

This guy has evidently forced his daughters to participate in his vile Role Playing obsession. Sick! |
