welcome newbs

announcing you're coming to "seoul" (one of the largest cities in the world) and asking who your neighbors are going to be is akin to moving to mexico city or new york and asking the same question

you're going to need to know what "gu" you are in... and better yet, what "dong" you are in

your neighbors will be those who live in the same dong

--

secondly, march is a long way out in esl time. a lot of teachers only stay for a year, and 1/4 of those will be gone by march

I'm coming to Korea, but I won't be near Seoul. I'm going very rural, about 100 miles west of Busan and 80 miles south of Dajeon/Daegu.
Yep, I'm in it for the rural bonus (public school).

Ha, that's exactly what I thought, too. For what - an extra hundred bucks a month?
However, to be fair, some people really dig it. Good luck to ya!

Man, I've been in Korea 5 years and I couldn't go rural.

Every little thing you do is going to be everyone's business because you'll likely be the only foreigner for a 100 miles. Everything you buy at the store and anything you do outside of your house is going to spread like wildfire. Good luck getting a date. Any girl that gets seen with you is going to hear about it from 15 different people the next day. God forbid some old adjoshi sees you walking to your apartment together.

I grew up in a small town State-side. I know what it's like for everybody to know what everybody is doing all the time. I hated it. I prefer to be a bit more anonymous.

awesome ! You should start a blog. It would be so original and interesting to follow an English teacher in Korea. Maybe the first of its kind.

It shocks me what some people will do here for the most minor of benefits.

Just a heads-up to you, Jamsil is a great area and everything. There's Olympic Park, relatively close to the Han, you've got Lotte World and the Big Lotte department store. Pretty centralized location.

However, it is one of the most expensive areas of Seoul. You might want to keep that in mind when you consider how much money you bring over here to set yourself up.

I doubt the 300,000 W settlement cash they give you (if that is part of your contract) is going to cover it.

But I think you'll enjoy living there!

sadly i have my contract right here by my side and there is no Won advance for utilities from my Jamsil Hagwon. I will be provided with a furnished apartment or 400,000 won if i choose to pursue a place on my own dime.

EXpensive or not, its an adventure, money can be wired if it becomes a problem! I hope lol Thank you however, id love advice, as i'm sure mr./mrs. eventually will .
