That motherboard is pretty darn nice, I would recommend it over the asrock extreme3 gen3, except it probably cost a little more. I recently built a rig for my friend with that exact mobo so I can attest to it's awesomeness.

but this card has a problem for cross firing. it has one 16x and one 4x slot for pci.
compared to the Asrock which has two 8x8 slots, which is better.
what are your thoughts? |

If by card you mean motherboard, then you're right. This mobo can crossfire no problem, but in a 2 GPU build, the 4x slot will be slightly bottlenecked. It really wont be that big of an issue if you put a 6850 in that slot, but you will see perhaps a 10% bottleneck. The Asrock would be a better choice if you're main goal was to crossfire GPU's, but since your main plan is to run a single GPU rig, the p8z68-v le would be a better choice.
Oh btw, looking at your build... I wouldn't recommend a Caviar Green HDD unless a quiet computer outweighs performance for you. The Caviar Greens are very quiet, but they are very slow.

Oh I didn't know that. I thought the only difference was the overclock. |

yes, I guess I will just be going with the single GPU set up for now, so I need to look more into mother boards, and perhaps bring the price down a little so put towards a better GPU like Eamo said.
and then 3 years from if the card is still standing, just buy a 2gb new card
and then if my card is still working, go with 3gig system. so I think I need to get a better MOBO.
EAMO- what card are you using?
IBSEN: what about you.. what you using?
regarding the HDD, do you recommend a better one for the price to size ratio?
I was planning on running my OS on a 7200rpm, and just keeping all my movies and games on the 5400. that wouldn't really make a difference on speed as I am just going to load from there right? mount the game with daemon tools. and just play a movie . |

I use an HD5850....a little dated now but I'm gaming much less these days so can't justify upgrading. Besides, the 5850 still plays all current games pretty well.
Any Sapphire HD6870 would be a sound choice for your needs.
You REALLY don't want any 5200rpm HDD's....any more than about 70% full and they will start chugging like a knackered donkey...
It's a bit unfortunate that the price of HDD's is way up.....I'm favoring Seagate drives again after a couple of WD and Samsung failed on me. |

yes, I have been spending MANY hours reading forums, Tomshardware, newegg, etc.. so many mixed opinions.
regarding the 6870 I think its a good level card for the price
1gig, 256bit, 900-940mhz Core Clock, Effective Memory Clock 4400+
Stream Processors: Effective Memory etc.. etc.. Blar blar blar LOL
starts getting confusing when you don't know what to look for.
I guess the higher the number the better hahhaha
so I will spend another week researching the card, and decide if I will upgrade to the next level the 6970 or not. I don't mind investing money for something which will provide years of enjoyment for me.
but then it comes down to thinking cross firing or one 2gig card.
but I think I will just start with the one 6870 card, I have this other guy in one of the forums trying to tell me otherwise hahaahaha
I still need to tell my wife I am spending over 1000 dollars for a pc.
she will probably just tell me to buy a XBOX! hahahaha
so much to learn.
appreciate your input guys. |

On a side note, more VRAM does not equate to higher performance. A 1gb 6870 will outperform a 2gb 4850 by miles. Also 2x 1gb Cards does not equal 2gb of VRAM. 2x 1gb cards = 1 gb of available VRAM.
2gb of vram is really only necessary if you are playing on multiple monitors or a single very high res monitor, both on Ultra settings. BF3 is the only game I know of that can actually utilize more than 1gb of VRAM on standard resolutions (1920x1080) at Ultra settings. But the differences are not very noticeable.
I am currently using 1x 6870 and 1x 6850 in Crossfire. I can play BF3 on Ultra @ 50fps+ 1920x1080. Btw, before you drop $300+ in a single card like the 6970, know that 2x 68xx are on par if not better than a single 6990, which is close to a $700 card.
As for the HDD, I would just recommend a Caviar Black if you could find one for a similar price. I didn't know you had 2 HDD's in it, so just loading movies from a Caviar Green would work fine, although loading games may take a little longer on a Green vs. a Black. |

can anyone recommend some parts, GPU, motherboard for me???

What's your budget? For a solid gaming rig that can play most games out right now (though some not at Ultra Settings) I would Get:
CPU: i5 2500K (OC to 4ghz on stock voltage)
Heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper 212+/EVO
Mobo: ASUS p8z68-v lx or ASRock gen3 extreme3 z68.
GPU: Radeon 6870
RAM: Gskill Ripjaws X-series 8GB DDR3 1600mhz
PSU: OCZ ZS Series 750W 80+Bronze
Case: Antex 300 Black
It would run you about $650 - $700 US, before the OS, case fans, CD/DVD Drive, or any other expansion slot parts you want. After all that you could be looking at around $800 US. Definitely worth it though, plus it is fairly future proof since all the parts can be upgraded further, such as Crossfiring/Overclocking the GPU in a few years or further overclocking the 2500K. |
PSU is probably over kill. I would consider getting the 560ti if it drops in price a little, it's a beast. |

See if they have the cheap gigabyte z68 board...might save some $$ See if you can order ram from crucial, that'll save you a few quid too...
The DVD rom, omg, you should be able to pick up a samsung or another brand for like 20,000. 80,000 is crazy expensive. Maybe try to get an old hdd off a friend, i.e. borrow or buy second hand, or swap one out from an old machine, hdd prices are through the roof since the floods in Thailand. The one you've chosen is a slow ass 5400rpm one too. Use Win 7. Try and get a student version or something, don't pay much for one. I might try for a cheaper case too...antec 300 maybe. |

if it's 1080p, then it's probably 1920x1080, so yes a 1gb card would do just fine.

You're probably right, I only suggested that since I use that one and it's beastly, plus it's reliable so it's a good for future-proofing. I personally wouldn't go below 650W though if you ever plan on crossfiring or adding more peripherals.
The 560ti is a good card, but cost like $80 USD more... Radeon cards, especially the 68xx series, scale much better in Crossfire than the GeForce cards do in SLI. The 560ti is a good card, but not worth it imo if you are just gaming. For video editing or high res photo rendering, Nvidia's GeForce cards are the way to go... but gaming and watching movies? Radeon cards will get you the best bang for your buck. |
