It certainly is possible. For example if you have a very slow metabolism or it's been damaged in some way (say an extreme diet) then yes it is possible to get fat from an ordinary diet/extraordinary situation.
As for a hard core swimmer..I doubt it. Supposedly Michael Phelps consumes 12000 calories a day (plus a ton of those 'evil carbs') yet look at how lean he is in the picture below.
http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/08/13/the-michael-phelps-diet-dont-try-it-at-home/
As an aside it should prove my point that it's not carbs or calories which make you fat. It's an EXCESS of calories whether they come from carbs, protein or fat. Phelps can get away with eating that much because he exercises enough to burn it off. And the same applies to ordinary people as well. If one is fat exercise more and eat less until one reaches the tipping point. And then STICK TO IT. |

I think Byron L. Richards' "5 Rules of the Leptin Diet" makes a lot of sense. I'm eating very litle white carbs these days. Losing weight and feeling much better. One author, Nora Gedgaudas even talks in her book Primal Body, Primal Mind, about how we can even live without carbs. Most of us do have some fat to burn.

Living without carbs would be very uncomfortable. To list just one thing...fiber is a carb. |

| One gets sufficient carbs from VEGETABLES, even if one doesn't consume potatoes or carrots. The difference is: veggies is HIGH nutrition too! |

Michael Phelps eats a ton of carbs and has no problem staying slim. I don't think he could perform as well on a low carb diet.

A professional athlete is also training for hours everyday. Normal people can't do this. |

"He's an endurance athelete and he needs to store" energy in the form of glycogen, to be able to perform at a high level over a sustained period of time. THAT is why he eats high carb meals. Your body LOVES TO STORE SUGAR in whatever form it is in.
No one debates the energy benefits of carbs, do they? In fact, all those who go on a low carb DIET understand exactly why Phelps eats so much carbs. They don't want their body to save energy by packing it away.
The fact that Phelps doesn't get adipose tissue has to do with the demands of his muscles for repair, the constant shock to his immune system of essentially-damaged (ie. sore) tissue (known as 'muscle') that INCREASES HIS METABOLISM: the rate at which his body uses energy.
Total number of calories is beside the point. |

I'm just pointingout that she feels that people do not need carbs in order to live. People must have fat and protein. Myself, I like complex carbs and am really trying to cut out most simple carbs, sugar and processed foods. Eating more organic as well. Toxins can make it very difficult for people to lose weight. |

Yup.
Notice that people who go on a low-carb diet never seem to go for the nuts, fish, and beans (the healthful choices)? No, it has to be steak and sausages. It's kind of like ordering a diet cola with a bucket of fried chicken. It allows the person to keep on indulging themselves without feeling any guilt. |

I'm a near-vegetarian (I eat occasional seafood) on a low-ish carb diet. When I do eat grain-based carbs, they're in the form of hot bran cereal or hot 10-grain cereal (once a week,) or Scandinavian bran crisp bread (3 or 4 times a week.) On very rare occasions, I have a mix of brown rice, black rice, barley, and 2 kinds of millet. This is maybe twice a month, and served with beans and veggies or wrapped into a vegetarian kimbap. I also snack on homemade popcorn covered in white-cheddar powder. For protein, I eat tofu once or twice a week (more than that isn't healthy because of estrogen-based cancer in my family.) Brazil nuts, walnuts, almonds, pecans, and a plethora of beans make up the majority of my protein.
I only do low-ish carb because I feel healthier when not eating bread, rice, or pasta on a regular basis. The carbs that I do eat are loaded with healthy fiber. |

You're in the minority.
I have a similar diet, but I also eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. We buy fruit by the crate, as a matter of fact. Resting heart rate in the low 50's. |

I think we all can agree that the best diet is the one which has the best long term effects/one that you can stick to.
http://www.emaxhealth.com/1024/1/35892/low-fat-diet-better-low-carb-diet-long-run.html
Note the length of this study. After three years the low fat dieters were more successful at keeping the weight lost off while the low carb dieters were trending upwards again. That means a majority of the low carb dieters were gaining weight again. Yes people lost the weight the fastest with a low carb diet and in this society of instant gratification that's a plus and attracts many people. But it would seem that a low fat diet is better for KEEPING the pounds off and losing MORE.
Most articles that I've seen that promote the low carb diet trumpet the results of this study or that...but they only list the effects for six months or a year...this one (which was fairly recent 2010) might provide a clue why. |
