The system in Australia is extremely generous (paid for out of taxpayer's money).
A baby bonus is paid for the birth of the baby .. currently $5400. A paid parental scheme has also been introduced.
"An eligible person will receive taxable PPL payments at the level of the Federal Minimum Wage, currently $543.78 a week, for a maximum period of 18 weeks. In most cases, the person will receive the payment through their employer." |

Yeah, five days isn't much. That's self-evident.
It could be that making a tiny change makes it easier for the government to say "we've dealt with that" when pressure groups approach them demanding real change. |
I think it's still more days than in the USA. |
Well, that's appalling. I think my sister and her husband got to split several months between them. |
What country do they reside? |
Canada (Quebec). I can't remember how many months it was but it was a lot better than five days. |
Quebec is by far the most generous province when it comes to family support.
Bascially women get 50-52 weeks of maternity leave paid at a declining rate: 70% for the first 20 or so weeks then 55% for the duration.
Fathers get 5 weeks at 70% but many employers bonify this.
Fathers and Mothers can split the 52 week period if they wish.
Daycare is pretty darn affordable at 7 bucks per day but places are hard to get until they roll out more spots. Taxes are higher in the Q however but they do get some services!
This did create what they called a mini babyboom in the Q. as its a favorable situation to start a family. |

You have 5 days to sow your seed as frequently and widely as possible. |
