| Why not just buy a laptop here? Duties, taxes, shipping fees of some sort make it unworth it. Think I bought an HP laptop for a million won in the spring at High Mart. I told them to install English Windows 7 and it was done. As a bonus, I can still type in Hanguel if I want to impress some K chicks. (But that's my interest maybe not yours. lol) You just need to slip a North American outlet adapter on it when you go home or go to Best Buy and get a new cord. You're good to go. |
Because prices here are ridiculous. Even after paying shipping, if you can avoid their stupid import taxes, it is much cheaper for a much better machine. |
I'll agree prices here are absurd. If you can avoid the duties, then it might be doable. I worry about getting broken in shipping. Sure you might be able to insure it, but warranty from here's a Biatch. Also, I want to use Hangeul sometimes. Guess that was my one redeeming thing. I don't game so I wasn't as picky about those specs.
Anyways, good luck to you. |

Though I've heard horror stories, my laptop shipped here with no problem via USPS (w/ insurance). If they decide to charge (or consider charging) you VAT (which prob. won't be a problem if it's marked as used, but don't quote me), Incheon'll send you a letter with an attached form, stating item, tracking no., etc etc. You can either send/fax the application or e-mail [email protected] (the e-addy on the sheet) with:
the tracking number, item name (eg "Notebook computer" [I made sure it said notebook and not laptop, just in case]), retail price, and 수취사용: 개인 사용합니다. ("purpose(?): This is for personal use.")
They'll then call you and will grill you with a lot of Korean, asking you how much it was, then they'll tell you how much it was with shipping, then you'll probably tell them that it was a gift and the seller was instructed to deliver it to you directly, that your mom told you that it cost X, then they'll tell you how much you owe and if they're cool, they'll just charge you what you said it cost you, which will be then collected upon delivery.
But this was the process for a new item. |
