Got a somewhat silly question.

I don't know if I'm being overly paranoid but I just sold something to someone in Korea. They said that they couldn't pick it up today as planned but would wire me the money to hold the item. I gave my account number not really thinking anything of it. However, is this safe?

I would say that was kind of dumb and you should go to the bank as soon as it is open to change your account number. Hopefully they didn't do anything illicit with it. You really should be very careful who you hand out your account number to.

Question

Giving your account number is standard operating procedure whenever you're purchasing or selling anything here. Koreans don't use checks, everything is done by money transfer. Not a big deal.

Really? I've never had to do it outside of using a debit card at a store. I'm not saying you're wrong. I just said it was dangerous because giving people your account number so they can wire you money is a classic scheme to steal your money in most places. Hopefully you're right and it's nothing.

Are you confusing account number and pin number?

Perfectly safe. The only thing the other party can do with it is deposit money in your account.

My mistake. I guess I am just overly paranoid when it comes to sharing financial information.

It's normal. One can only deposit with the account number, not make any withdrawals. I pay my rent by wiring the money to my landlord. I pay my tuition by wire transfer as well (though I do wish I could have used my credit card and earned some cashback points.) Don't worry about it.
