There has been a few times where middle school girls took my phone and dialed their number. Nothing ever happened. No prank phone calls or anything. I guess I got lucky.

not a good idea, regardless of the level you teach.

For university students, give out an office number with voicemail and check your mail regularly. Tell them you will call them back withing a set amount of time.

I would never give my personal number.

When I was teaching University we had an "office" voice mail and a uni email account. I check emails regularly and responded that way. Were I work there today it would be even simpler with an IPhone as you could set up a FB page for your students where they can ask questions and keep the page open to send you notifications of messages.

If you teach kids or MS\HS students I would never hand out my phone number. That is just asking for trouble.

This really isn't that complicated.

It really comes down to how you are perceived by your work place and your fellow teachers.
If you are considered a professional teacher and have that image and respect...there usually isn't a problem one way or the other...if not...problems.

Perception is key.

Korean teachers should and do give out their phone numbers...they are professional educators, the corner stones of society, and considered as second parents to their precious students...this is understood and accepted as fact.

Foreign teachers shouldn't give out their phone numbers...they are sexual predators...this is also understood and accepted as fact.

Any questions?
Feel free to feed my troll. Wink
