It looks as if I have a long layover at JFK during the day so I want to head into Manhattan. However, I've been in and out of Newark and LaGuardia several times but never gone through JFK. Anyone know the easiest way to get into Manhattan? It's been years since I've been there and last time I was at LaGuardia there were these Carey(sp?) Buses that went into the city that were reasonably priced. Any suggestions other than cab? Is there a subway line?

thanks.

If you don't have a lot of luggage, there's a bus that goes from JFK to Grand Central. It was $15 last time I took it...book with NYAS or pay at the airport.

There is a subway line, and it's $5 for the Airtrain to the subway station then $2.50 for the subway. Transferring is a pain in the ass though. I think the Long Island Railroad stops at Jamaica Station which should get you into Penn Station in about 20 minutes. There's always SuperShuttle but it tends to be slow.

If it's just for a layover, I'd go for the bus. It shouldn't be too bad as long as you don't hit traffic into Manhattan.

Excellent, thanks. I haven't been to NYC since '95 so I am actually pleased with the 9 hour layover.

Yeah, if you are at JFK at rush hour, I'd go with the LIRR method if you want to go to midtown Manhattan. If you're cool with Brooklyn or the southern end of Manhattan, then the A train is the way to go.

I was probably going to hit mid-town, but I actually have heard that certain parts of Brooklyn are worth a visit.

Anthony Bourdain has a new show for this express purpose, and his first episode was about New York. Check out The Layover - New York and you might get some really solid ideas, particularly in the food deparment.
