I was walking down Kao San road at 4:30 in the morning on my way to Coffee World when I came across a group of Thais beating and kicking another Thai woman or transvestite (hard to tell). It looked like they might be intent on killing her so I tried to stop it and was subsequently hit over the head with a beer bottle. I went down the street covered with blood to get the police. When the police came they were absolutely feckless, I was appalled. Sometime this month I'm going to go see the FBI liason at the embassy. I think he should at least hear about this. People think that Thais are just wonderful, smiling, spiritual people and they really are not. |

I think anybody with half a brain already knows that the Thais are just like any other nationality; there are good people, there are bad people, and there are people every shade of grey inbetween. Please don't let a run in with some of the bad Thais affect your opinion of the Thailand or it's people as a whole, because terrible things can happen pretty much anywhere. And incompetent police exist pretty much everywhere as well. |

I'm sure he'll be shocked and appalled to hear you got into a brawl on Kao San road at 4:30 am. Just watch the FBI spring into action on this one and swiftly get all the culprits behind bars. |

I didn't get into a brawl. I tried to stop someone from being continously seriously beaten and possibly killed. |

You stepped into a situation that was none of your business, in a foreign country, got dealt with by a local and wanna take it to the FBI?

Should have called 1155 then continued on your way. It ain't Kansas there Toto.
Thinking that Kao San Road is anything like Thailand is just stupid (sorta like the tourists getting fleeced in times square is reflective of the rest of the US).
And the FBI doesn't give a hoot. They don't get involved in ANYTHING local.
Your misplaced sense of justice and American morality could just as easily have gotten yourself killed just about as fast as being bashed with a bottle.
Oh, and the police in Thailand are for rent to the highest bidder. If you think something should have been done about it you should have waved a few "Ben Franklins" around and you would have gotten what you seek.

Your instincts were right. To help someone being beaten is a good thing. Now a Canadian sense of moralityyou would have to as the U.K for permission to help But Thailand is dangerous. Much more so than Korea or china. You are lucky all you got was bashed and lived to walk away. Forget the F>B>I it wa a street fight and not their business. 4:30 in the morning in a big city is dicy where ever you are. Several foreigners are killed every year in Thailand something you rarely hear of in Japan, Korea or China. heads up. |

My story: I was walking down a street in a Southern City of the U.S. I understood that there was some sort of college NFL game played that afternoon. It was about 7 pm and there were a group of men wearing some college football uniform beating on one man wearing a different one. It looked like there were going to kill him. So I went in to try and stop it and then was hit over the head with a bottle. With blood all over me I went to the local police, but nothing was really done. Tomorrow I am going to my Canadian embassy and get their reaction to this. Maybe the embassy will have a few mounties ride on down to sought this out. People think that Americans are just football loving, beer drinking, pizza lovin people but they are really not.
To OP, please be advised that this was done in humor. But please, grow up. Travel a bit. What you saw at 4:30 in the morning is typical of any city around the world. Name your city and I am sure that someone can give an example of just the same thing. |

You were lucky that's all you got. The idea of being a hero is nice in theory, but unless you are absolutely hard-as-nails and actually able to take on a group of violent Thai guys single-handed, interfering in a situation like you did is not wise. |

All the people on here who happily walk by while a defenseless person is getting killed a few feet away, how do you sleep at night?
OP did the right thing. Just because violent crime happens anywhere in the world does not make it acceptable. |

The FBI in Korea will have a good laugh over lunch retelling your 'complaint' story. |

I would be troubled by what I had seen, but would probably sleep fairly easily, glad to not be in a hospital bed or worse.

It's not acceptable and it's not nice to witness, but in such a situation described by the OP, where one has absolutely no idea of the circumstances and those involved in it, I fail to see how interfering can be the "right thing." |

I fail to see that whatever the victim did deserves being beaten to death by multiple other people.

Would it be the "right thing" to do if it was you who was the person being murdered? |
