No way this forum is representative of EFL'ers out there.
You get a handful - 15 to 30 regulars here? Some think they know it all and start off as expert advisors after their first contract.
There are thousands of TEFL'ers in Asia who probably never even look at Daves EFL board never mind post here. Nope - not representative.
Posters here are an extremely small sample of the population of teachers out there. |
and your point is? I didn't know that internet boards are supposed to be repsentative but if you could point me to better one on korea then I will of course head over there. |
I agree that there is no better board that attracts teachers in Korea. And while I feel that the Question/Answer board provides useful info, I feel that the Job board is deeply misrepresentative, in the sole fact that it is a one-sided board, and whenever one makes a small attempt to share the viewpoints of the other side of things, that opinion gets streamrolled by the masses that don't want to believe that they may be wrong or off course, and just unwilling to have any less contempt for schools and recruiters. As in just one recent example, where I tried to express another viewpoint that was ignored, to allow contemptuous assumptions to run free. And why I try to offer other vantage points at times, is mostly so I can hear one less newbie say 'is it all bad in Korea' or 'why should I even come there?'
I researched the prospect of coming to Korea for 2 years on the old board (which was far less negative on Korea) and I had to unlearn 90% of my eslcafe-led beliefs after coming to Korea. This new board, now that is more organized and navigatable, has even greater chance of hurting versus helping teachers with misinformation.
I don't know how much it would help, but I feel that there should be a newbie forum, that accurately presents the risks and rewards of working here, so newbs can see this first, plus the sticky threads that can caution newbies on acting solely on advice given on this board. That opinions felt by the 50-60 regular posters are not necessarily matched by the 5000+ foreign teachers in Korea, who don't post here.
This board is the only one that is good, but when comparing it to englishspectrum and Koreanesl, that is no difficult feat. However, this board has the most potential of the 3, as it garners the most web traffic and following. It'd be nice to have a newbie forum, and perhaps even a Site Suggestions forum, so posters can contribute ideas on how to make the place better and more representative of teaching here. |

You offered your opinion to the masses, sometimes they believe you sometimes they don't. No doubt in a similar way if you offered an alternative opnion to 'university admin people aren't that bad and aren't out to get you' to your average group of student activists you would get a same or similar response.

Sorry to sound post modern on you but our experiences of korea are all going to be different. In my own area there are a group of people living in the same builiding who hate the area and the apartment, while others really enjoy it. Same deal here. You get someone else's view of the world which will peppered with their own experiences and preferences. I could ask 50 people what chocolate tasted like. I could get up to 50 different responses but the only way I would really know what chocolate tasted like is to eat myself.

There has been some attempt to do that with both the Q and A as well as the FAQ. Personally I think that most people with even a modicum of common sense would know not to use the words of an internet discussion board as the bible on teaching in korea but rather a small snapshot of the people postinig here.

There is currently a [http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=18909]sticky[/url] in the Q and A. You are free to repost some of the comments there. |

The OP asks whether the board is reprasentative of "ESL in Korea", not "ESL teachers in Korea". The fact that a lot of teachers don't post here is irrelevant. The forum is democratic, if more people dissagree with you than agree, then that's the way it is. You can't make this forum better or more informative than it already is.
And it's not perfect, but nothing is. |
