Deadliest Year on Record for Elephants

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: December 29, 2011

Large seizures of elephant tusks made 2011 the worst year on record for elephants since ivory sales were banned in 1989, experts said on Thursday. Recent estimates suggest that as many as 3,000 elephants were killed by poachers, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, an advocacy group. Tom Milliken, an elephant and rhino specialist for Traffic, a wildlife trade monitoring network, said that most cases involve the smuggling of ivory from Africa into Asia, where growing wealth has fed the desire for ivory ornaments and for rhino horn that is used in traditional medicine, though scientists have proved it has no medicinal value.

A "Poach the Poachers" program would be nice.

Its because of all the Chinese and Asians that have moved into Africa in recent years. The second colonisation of Africa.

Exploit all the resources for the motherland, lord it over the natives, and forget about ethics. Hello nouveau-riche China.

Yes. In North Africa I have seen shops catering entirely to the Chinese filled with Ivory trickets. Human scum buy and sell this product, absolute human scum.

Given half a chance the Chinese will abuse Africa far worse than european colonisers ever did.

Unfortunately African dictators are busy selling their countries to Beijing in return for half of the profits paid into their personal bank accounts.

IMHO east Asian values often view other species on the earth as inferior, to be plundered and exploited for quick human commercial gain.
There is also a lack of education or awareness of the consequences of what they are doing among the general public..

Its very confucian to see humans as atop a heirarchy of life with animals at the bottom.. being unworthy of respect.
