Hey everyone! For Canadians, you DO NOT have to get an RCMP check. Any criminal check, whether it is a local check, provincial check or RCMP check, will suffice. Americans, you have to get an FBI check, no way around that.
However, if it is a local or provincial check then somewhere on the check it must say that the information was culled from the RCMP national database. In my experience dealing with Canadian applicants, most local & provincial checks automatically say this, but you should double check. I recommend all my staff avoid getting an RCMP check precisely because it takes forever (I've had staff wait 5+ months for their checks).
As for fingerprints, some Canadian embassies have electronic fingerprinting, but I'm not sure about the Canadian Embassy in Seoul. Usually most embassies will only fingerprint you if it's to identify your body.
A lot of foreigners have problems getting fingerprints from Korean police stations because (for some reason that I have never had explained) the cops taking the fingerprints often don't want to sign the forms.
The easiest way around this is to get fingerprinted at the Korean National Police Science & Technology Center. This is located at the Seodaemun Police Station (NOT the National Police HQ in Seodaemun). Get off at Seodaemun Station, go out exit #7 and walk about a minute. The Science & Technology Center is on the 4th floor of the Seodaemun Police Station. They will fingerprint you on English fingerprint forms or they will use your country's fingerprint form. Bring your passport and ARC.
Hope this helps! |

I went through these hoops last June, all for naught (it ended up being easier to just go to Canada for three weeks and doing the paperwork there).
Step 1: The RCMP don't require you to use their fingerprint form, but the Korean police won't use theirs for the RCMP. You have to go to the nearest consulate and pick up the fingerprint forms.
Step 2: mail it off with a cheque for x-amount and wait. I sent mine in June 2011, and just received it in the mail in Canada in the middle of December. That's 7 months.
The RCMP won't accept digital fingerprints from outside the country (as of June 2011, might have changed now). |

| About to send mine in. Got the form from the embassy as was recommended on this thread. Do you have to include the vulnerable sector consent form? The paper from the embassy explaining the steps didn't mention it. |

Not being lazy and actually doing my own research can get results.
How can I obtain a vulnerable sector check to work in a position located outside of Canada?
vulnerable sector checks can only be performed for positions located within Canada. Police agencies are not authorized to perform vulnerable sector checks for positions located outside of Canada. This rule applies even if the person will be working for a Canadian organization. |

| The VSS requirement was scrapped back in 2009. You do not need (and cannot legally get) a VSS check for employment in Korea. |

| The biggest problem in Canada is that the "paper-munching" division of the RCMP is more interested in internal bureaucracies instead of helping Canadian citizens overseas. I hope the duration of the RCMP background check would be shorten drastically in the near future. |

The RCMP Check in Canada does take a lot of time. It took 4 months for my RCMP check to come back.
I am now wondering if I need to get the RCMP check notarized by a lawyer before going to the consulate.
If anyone has more information about this please let me know.
Thanks |

I went to the police station today and they told me that they do not have a form to use for fingerprints. It was the police station in Seocho, Seoul. I'm Canadian and the RCMP will not e-mail me the form. Its only available by snail mail and unfortunately I don't have the luxury of time.
Does anyone have any info on a station that has the forms at the police station? |

| I just get one when I visit back home. It takes about a week. You do a digital scan and fill out a form at a private company. It's worth the price because you don't have to wait 5 months |

Yeah that is kind of a last resort option. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world but I'd prefer to keep my current job.
Anyway I just read about Seodaemun above. Missed it before. I'll check that out. |

Call the Canadian Embassy in Seoul & they'll express mail you the rcmp fingerprint form pronto (I got it the very next day) & the main copshop here in my town processed it no problem.
I had the luxury of time so I opted for the fed check, through my daughter in Vancouver who couriered it on to Ottawa, as probably the most fail-proof.
She received it back today. It took 4.5 months. |
