Anybody tried 'Hwayo' lineup? It's not an Andong Soju, but what Soju should have been like.

Here's another shocker: Most soju isn't even made from rice anymore.

You need a heavy carbohydrate to get alcohol (I have no idea how this works, I'm just repeating what I read) and since potatoes are much cheaper, the soju companies switched to them years ago. A cheaper carb means a cheaper, less pure, alcohol.

I thought that it was common knowledge the soju is made from sweet potatoes. I didn't even know that it used to be made from rice. I think that every Korean that I asked, said that it's made from sweet potatoes.

what's not to like about soju? For less than 10 dollars you can get royally mashed up and still have enough cash to buy a pack of ciggies. Truly magical.

Soju's disgusting. I don't think I've ever had the displeasure of tasting such a foul alcoholic drink. Ranks up there with vodka in disgusting-ness. I don't understand why people drink the stuff and frankly what pisses me off even more are people that keep claiming it's good and keep saying I should try some. These days I just cut them off from the start with a straight-up "No".

Then again, I'm pretty convinced I'm not Korean-I don't drink regularly, I don't smoke and I have NEVER gotten anywhere NEAR smashed. Ever.

Also be aware that soju is a massive 540 calories per bottle. Yes, that typical little green bottle of just 330ml is 540 calories.

A good eating and drinking session with my ajeossi friends can, including food, put over 1500 - 2000 calories into my system! For one meal! Not good.

Regular soju drinking, even fairly moderate amounts, can add thousands of extra calories to your diet per week and is especially bad for those who don't do much exercise. The danger being high-blood sugar levels leading to type-2 diabetes.

This is not as straightforward as you're suggesting, as calories from alcohol, while consumed for fuel, are not stored as fat. Yes, a night of drinking can prevent the body from burning calories it would otherwise burn (and from what I've read, the body prioritizes alcohol when burning calories), alcohol with healthy snacks shouldn't increase your weight.

I'm talking more about the effect that all that sugar could have on your blood-sugar levels if you drink soju regularly.

To put it in context, one 330ml bottle of soju has approx 4 times more calories than a 330ml can of regular coke. And high-sugar or HFCS soda is thought to be one of the culprits that leads to type-2 diabetes, which there's a bit of an epidemic of these days.

I didn't really mean to imply that soju will make you fat.....but it certainly will contribute............I'm more worried about all that sugar.

Something that I find a bit odd is that all food products in Korea contain a highly detailed label that lists all ingredients, nutrition information, etc.... except alcoholic beverages. Apparently someone somewhere has decided that we don't need this information.

I wonder about this too.

IMO there's just something slightly off with soju. It's like they've added a heavy mix of synthetic chemicals that hits me in a weird way. It can't only be about the alcohol content or quality, because I can handle most other alcohol. it's like there's something in there that shouldn't be but they aren't telling us what it is.

Cass hits me in a similar way, in fact they can't even label it as 'beer' so that might tell you something right there. Cass drags me down and I get a headache soon after drinking more than two cups of it but I can throw down almost any most other non-Korean beers.

I have a Korean friend who claims Korean companies make bad beer so they can sell more soju. In his mind Korean companies couldn't possibly make worse beer than other Asian countries, so they must be doing it on purpose. Laughing

What I like about soju is that it makes drinking so easy. Man, woman, young, old, gay or straight - it doesn't matter. You know what they'll want to drink. No fannying about getting a round of fancy Euro lagers, wines, alcopops or whatever. Soju is the true binding force of Korean society; the one thing everyone can rely on. That green bottle is the Korean equivalent of the ghetto crack pipe. Accept no substitutes.

I thought Hite D was as 'high-quality' as K beer gets. TBH, that's not all that bad and tastes similar to most other lagers. As for soju, you know what you're getting into when the top comes off that bottle. It's not about taste or palate at all. It just means Hammer Time.
