South Korea will ban international marriage brokers from introducing one Korean man to multiple prospective foreign brides at one time at matchmaking meetings that are reminiscent of human trafficking, the government said Monday.
The brokers will also be prohibited from introducing underage foreign women to Koreans and be obliged to keep records on personal information of marriage seekers for a certain period, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said.

And then it will take another 5 to 10 years before ayone actually enforces the law.
Most likely after some sojued up farmer in the sticks beats the crap out/kills his poor defenseless south east asian wife. |

Wonder if it still applies to foreign men living in Korea? lol
I don't know about you boys, but the idea of meeting a dozen 19 year old South East Asian beauties ready and willing to be my housewife doesn't sound too bad to me. |

I don't know about the time frame, but I wonder how they even plan to enforce this law.
If I casually introduce a Korean man to a few of my foreign friends at a party and he happens to marry one of them, am I now an "international marriage broker" in violation of the law? I know that's not exactly the same as what these companies are doing, but there's clearly a huge amount of gray area here which will make it difficult to enforce.
Also, is this really that much different than showing a man an album of pictures and profiles to choose from, like marriage agencies already do? Isn't this really the sole purpose of a marriage agency? To provide a client with a large number of potential partners with the hope that at least one of them will be suitable? Does it matter if it's in person or not? Or if they meet one at a time or in a group? If having a man choose a a girl from a line-up is wrong, then printing up a list of photos for a man to order from like a restaurant menu must be just as bad. Yet we don't see the government trying to shut the entire industry down.
Besides, almost all of these meetings take place outside of Korea (the women can't get visas to come here until after they are married) If the government somehow stops Korean companies from doing this (and I'm not at all convinced they will be able to), a bunch of companies will pop up in Vietnam and the Philippines doing the exact same thing and the Korean government won't be able to control it.
My guess is that the Korean companies might not be able to openly advertise this anymore, but they will still do it.
It's an industry that is plagued with problems, but I'm not quite sure what the solutions might be. |

I thought that because it's already happened (not sojud up, but simply either the husband or his relations were pissed off at the foreign bride) is the reason for the new law. |
