Ha. I also took a countryside position for my first job, lured in by all the people online talking about how it wasn't so bad and you could save more money and it wasn't so bad. It WAS bad. The isolation was incredible. No stores around my apartment and I was a long walk from the village bus stop. It wasn't just that it was inconvenient, it felt just... empty and lost. And I LIKE being alone. I wanted to leave after about an hour though I stuck it out for six months. (Still had to get a new visa, but didn't have to pay back airfare. And I was able to hammer down the debt that brought me to Korea in the first place.)

I don't consider it to have been a character-building experience, incidentally. It was pure misery, borderline traumatizing. I still feel a pang of dread when I go into a Korean public school building.

You can call it princess syndrome or entitlement, but it's more likely just a kind of culture shock and not something to beat someone up over. It takes time to get over it even under favorable conditions.

Sounds like my hometown (well, village) in England where I grew up. It also sounds like you didn't do anything pro-active to remedy what you perceived as problems. Nothing to do? Hell, buy a bike so you can easily travel to the nearest town.

Also I don't care how rural you are, there's no excuse for 'being bored' when you have the internet. You can view/download literally the summation of all human culture and knowledge, if you know the right sites to use. It's like being in the World's biggest library and saying can't find anything to read.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this. If you haven't signed a contract then they won't give you any money. Anyhow you usually get something like 300,000 Won the first day you arrive to carry you over. Your paycheck is monthly and I don't know if you get payed the first payday. I think you might. Airfare reimbursement you have to wait 6 months for.

Go to your English Coordinator for the county you are in and talk to her or him.

As far as being unhappy about the location, you might grow to like it after you look around a little while. It's a GEPIK contract so your close to Seoul. Go there on the weekends. Deal with the roaches in your apartment with some Raid. Apartments that have no roaches in them have usually been sprayed. If you seriously worried about insecticides, you might keep in mind that in the summertime many rural areas openly fumigate thier cities to kill off the mosquitos and all the tiny flying insects that are a pain in the ass. There are trucks that go around and smoke and gas the area. Most of the people I talk to like this much better than they like dealing with the mosquitos. If you're in an area outside of town you may have to deal with a lot of flying insects, because they might not fumigate there.

Another thing, if you quit you're not likely to get a better teaching job unless you go home and get licensed. Also you have to make money somewhere and you have to get teaching experience that you can put down on your CV at some place, for the really nice jobs that might come later. You better be reasonable and stick it out and do the best job you can.

I'm curious about where the OP lives. None of us know her exact location, although it can explain a lot. I sympathize with her in that it's hard to adjust at the very first week. Although I'm in a large city, it took awhile for me to get acquainted with my neighborhood. If she's in a small city/town, then I can imagine that lost feeling being a lot bigger than mine when I first arrived. I'm also curious as to who is responsible for helping her while her head co-teacher is not there.

But what future teachers can also learn from this is that you have to do a lot of work (research etc) to get exactly the job you want. Everyone knows that public school placements are a crapshoot and you could get the best or worst situation, or something in between. And if she applied directly to the school and knew the name and location beforehand, it's her fault for not doing enough research. But we don't know enough about her application process. I wish she came back and gave us an update.

Hopefully she'll read this thread. If she is leaving, the right thing to do is at least find a replacement and make it easier for the school to transition. Personally I wouldn't give up so quickly, considering the time and energy it takes, especially nowadays, to prepare for a position in Korea. but it's not my situation.

I admire your courage of saying something like "hell no" to the public schools in this country. Laughing

Kudos to you, good ma'am.

Look, nobody is saying "how dare she not like it here. Or "how dare she not like this amazing country" what most of us are saying, if you bothered to read the post properly, is that it usually takes longer than a week to make your mind up about something. Nothing wrong with leaving, but as long as you give it a chance.

ITs been 2.6 years since I've been here. This is my second school and its been a nightmare. First, the entire staff refuses to communicate with me on any level, even professional. I can't get any information regarding budget and location for English camp that starts in two days. The 8 months I have been here I have had personal property stolen, a drunk man entering my apartment in the middle of the night and many more attempts that followed. I had bed bugs and all the school would do is spray my apartment and refuse to communicate with the management about other apartments. In other words, the bed bug sitch was never resolved until I ordered pesticide from the U.S.

They are threatening to charge me airfare and moving expenses which is laughable because this school didn't pay for any of my airfare or moving expenses. I've had and I am taking my skills to a country that hopefully shows more appreciation and is more foreigner friendly. Life is too short and there is NO incentive to stay on til the end of my contract, especially when I have a job that is paying more.

Rather amusing post, let's investigate.

It's been 2.6 years since you have been on Dave's or you have lived in Korea for 2.6 years? This is bit of an ambiguous remark.

So you were with your first school for 2 years, no problems? I am just putting numbers together.

How does a drunk man enter your apartment? You leave the door unlocked? Did they enter through the window? My mind is trying to draw a serious plight here. It ain't happening.

A guy with spray is not drunk. Now we have the answer.

Did you smoke'em out? What superior US product did you buy? Enquiring minds want to know.

Charge you airfare, but you have to plan camp lessons? Oh, the trials and tribulations.

Yea, I heard Candyland is hiring.

So, does that mean you are staying in the country? The grammar you used would imply that you are working probably illegally at another school. The logic you used would imply you have a job offer in another country that WILL pay more. If so, which country?

Funny post, gave me something to giggle over tonight.

You might throw those around you off kilter with your sudden leave, but in the end you got to do, what you got to do. Some people are terrified of roaches, and that's understandable. I used to live in a roach infested house for over 10 years; they wouldn't go away. But, the roaches in Korea are another matter. They are big, and some can fly! If you have roaches of these sorts, then I can understand where you're coming from.

In any case, if you fully believe that you have done what you can, then do what you must. Learn from it. Be more cautious about housing and so on. If you are having panic attacks, just keep strong.
