My kind-hearted parents must have forgotten than they don't use dollars over here for transactions, and sent me a 100 dollar gift card for Christmas. I'm not really sure on how I'm supposed to make this thing turn into won. Anyone know anything about this?

My only ideas are trying to buy things from websites that ship to America (but I can't think of anywhere I would use it), or using it on base somewhere, but I don't have any military friends, nor do I want to make the trip to go out there and look around, but possibly not find anything I want. I'd prefer just to find a way to get the full balance in SK won put into my Kookmin bank account.

Has anyone ever dealt with this before?

I'm assuming this is the "Chase Visa Gift Card"? With the Visa logo in the lower right corner? If so, it does work in Korea anywhere that Visa debit cards are accepted (almost everywhere). What is a little bit more tricky is keeping track of the daily exchange rate, exchange fees, etc and knowing exactly how much that $100 is worth in Korean won.

Yep, that's the one. So it'll work anywhere and automatically convert to KRW? That's nice, but I feel like I'm only going to be able to spend $95 or so of it due to being worried about the fluctuations of the won.

You got $100 for free and you are worried about $5?

Think about it this way, if you pulled $100 from your US checking account at a Korean ATM, you would get hit with $5 in fees anyways.

If I were you, buy stuff that can be shipped to Korea from the U.S.

And spend 1/3 of the gift on shipping?

Check the website on the back of the card...you should be able to register it which means that you can check the remaining balance on it as well as being able to use it online.

Tried it at the Family Mart today, and it worked. I just need to now convert 23,500 won into dollars and figure out how much came off the card.

Think 1200 won per dollar . Then, when you think it's empty, use it the next time you need a quart of milk. Keep doing that every time you need milk until it doesn't work anymore. That's what I do when I get Korean gift cards and I can't be bothered with checking online for the balance.

Check eBay. You'd be surprised how much stuff offers free international shipping.
