|

So I've visited the clinic for a persistent cold and the doctor suggested 3 days worth of prescription medicine along with an injection into your glute muscles. The injection seems to be a standard cure-all for colds and flu and quite popular amongst patients - I always hear the nurse slapping some patient's butt before sticking the syringe in. What exactly is in the injection? Some people swear that the injection does wonders. |

Placebo. A lot of Koreans expect a shot when seeing the doctor. And in order to make an un-sick patient go away a shot in the butt usually does the trick. |

There is no cure for a cold or flu. You can only treat the symptoms and as jvalmer said one way of doing that is through the placebo effect. The injection is also a result of the fact that Koreans have to make a big deal about something and get a doctor's note before they can take a day off work sick or miss something.Hence the visit to the hospital and the injection when the best thing would probably just be to stay in bed and take plenty of liquids. |

It's mostly a liquid mixture of mercury, conspiracy theories, Jenny McCarthy and CIA control juice. |

It's an anti-viral.
The oral medication is most likely an anti-biotic. |

They give the butt injection for anything. I had a urinary tract infection/STI and was given the butt injection.

Most Koreans don't know because they don't ask. They trust their doctors so why are you asking? Vitamin C |

To be fair, I felt like I had the black lung and after I got a shot, it went away. |

anti-virul injection - although it could be given in pill form it is part of a research study.
Korean doctors are paid per patient, to record the skin color of the "butt" and whether the patient is wearing panties or not, and whether the patient has the "mongolian spot" and whether the patient's butt is clean or not by research companies.
So, they demand the injection in the butt on most consultations so that they can record these observations.
really, there is no need for it. |

There is no such thing as an anti-viral for colds. It is a concentrated dose of vitamin B12. |

I asked the doctor last time and he said it was just cold medicine. He asked me if I want it or not. It gets into your system fast so you feel better right away. It just treats the symptoms. |

But the slapping keeps them coming back? |

hahaha this made me giggle. I've asked at least 3 coworkers what was in one of those shots and NO ONE can seem to give me a straight answer. As someone previously said, I honestly think they don't know, which is astounding because any time anyone gets near me with a needle, my first inclination is to ask what the hell it is!
The doctors visits here in general are always mystifying to me... |

The common injection is just some cold medicine to treat the symptoms of your cold. It is not anti-viral. It may or may not contain vitamins. It's basically a non-drowsy "Tylenol Cold" pill in butt shot form.
@Koreatimes - Loved the butt slap comment. THAT was funny. |

In Peace Corps we received an injection on top of our butt cheeks that was called gamma globulin. My understanding was that it just generally boosted immunity. Not sure if this is related. |
