Not like it matters, but I am curious as to how old you guys are. Purely a question just for fun. Age holds no significance in this field, in my opinion. Just a fun fact, you know. I expect to see ages ranging from early 20s to possibly even late 60s, and that's great.
I can't post every age, obviously, so I will just put an age range, and you can reply with a post with your exact age. Also, it would be nice to add what age you got into EFL/ESL.
For example,
I am 27, and this will be my first year in the ESL industry.

I'm 27 and came over when I was 24. I had no training, no certs, and just went for it not knowing what to expect.
Now I've got my TEFL and am working on my B. Ed. and ESL AQ back in Canada and expect to be back either this year or next. |

| most of the people i've met here have been in their 20s. the people who still teach and are in their 40s+ at a Hagwon really make me wonder why they're here |

No need to wonder. We're here for the same reasons younger people are - money, adventure, enjoy teaching etc.. |

| 32. Came here for the first time when I was 24 and have been back and forth a few times. Have been here six years in a row now. Will probably leave next year. Still love it, but feel it's time for a new adventure. |

I'm 27. I came over when I just turned 23. I was going to go back home this year because my loans are just about gone but then I met a girl so it looks like I'll stay.
Sometimes I feel like I'm working at McDonald's because all the other people I meet in the same line of work are 22-24 and here I am, almost 30. I like being here though. I don't have a lot of options back home so I'm going to develop a long term plan, hopefully including my girlfriend, for the future. Not sure what continent my life will be on (likely this one as the girlfriend has a 'real job' and is a professional whereas she'd have to sacrifice all of it to come to Canada with me). |

I turned 36 shortly after arriving here in Korea 6 months ago. This is my first ESL job and have only been in this industry for yeah, 6 months.
I feel a bit like a fringe dweller due to my age and gender, as well as not liking drinking culture or hiking.
Love Korea, but not my job. If I am to continue here I think I'll get more educated or at the very least a different job. |

Well being 40 plus really doesnt matter. I was late 20's got tired of the rat race and wanted to do something more fulfilling. Maybe that makes no sense. I was slowly doing the corporate company thing. Started at the bottom trying to climb the latter. Had the chance to apply for some promotions. I have a little management experience in the past. But, I hated the politics and the illogical slow decision making. I hated being a cog in the wheel or a number. While I got along well with my bosses and co workers, I wanted to get out and see the world. Also my student loans weren't getting paid because living costs took too much of my income.
So, I came over here. Mind you it was a different time. Exchange rates were better, living costs were cheaper, salaries increasing, etc. The recession has changed things over here.
I getting near mid 30's and still paying on debts (reasons mentioned above and my own spending, travelling, etc I guess). Anyways, maybe the 40's and 50 year olds worked back home and got tired of the grind. Don't judge until you walk a mile in their shoes.
I guess there are different reasons. Some may have started doing this when they were young and stayed. Some may have stayed because of marriage, some may have wanted a change in their life, some might be escaping the US downturn, and some might be losers who couldn't function in the west.
But those reasons above could almost apply to anyone in any age group. If you're happy and like what you're doing then who cares? But by your 40's or 50's I would hope you're planning for retirement or some other options (maybe be married and run your own school or something). |

Let me add that until the recession, there was a more even mix of age groups teaching here. Mayeb central Seoul had young teachers but other cities had an even mix of ages and the rural areas always had old people. But the recession has flooded the market with many who are younger. Still the survey results above surprised me a little. More older than I thought. But then again Dave's isn't scientific or anything. lol |

I'd KILL to meet some of the 25+ crowd. Most of the time I see foreigners around here in Ansan or in Seoul, the men look like they can't even grow facial hair yet.  |
