Seasonal Hiring Schedule?

Hi Everyone! I had a few questions about the seasonal hiring schedule for most recruiters and schools/hagwons. I'm currently in Seoul as a student.

This coming Fall 2012, I'd like to take a break and work for a year. When do most schools and recuritors start hiring for the fall? I assume sometime in the summer? When would be the best time to start looking and applying?

As a student, I also do not have my CBC yet. I'll have my apostilled degree in about a month, but I'm waiting to apply for my CBC because I'm afraid that it will expire before I'm able to acquire a job.

The reason I'm thinking about getting my CBC now is because I'm looking for part-time work for the time being while I'm still studying.

If I applied for my CBC now and it gets processed in February, it would expire sometime in July. If I get hired in the summer, but don't start working until September/October then does that mean my CBC is no longer valid and I'll have to apply for another one sometime in the spring or summer?

I'm very confused about this. Does the CBC only have to be valid until I sign a contract or until I actually start teaching?

If you were in my position, when would you apply for your CBC? I plan to send it to the FBI myself and then have it sent to a friend in the States to mail to DC from there. I assume it will take about 2-3 months total since I won't be using expedited mail or one of those sketchy apostille services.

As a newb to the Korean English teaching world, I appreciate the advice and wisdom of the veterans. Thanks a lot! :D

i've see job positions for 2-3 months in advance. the public schools here begin in March, and I started getting emails about positions in late decemeber.

i'm not sure if you're allowed to work anywhere if you're under a student visa (d-4)

your CBC needs to be less than 6 months old when it's processed by immigration, not when you start working. you need a contract in order to start the process though

Usually how soon do you start teaching after you sign a contract? 2-3 months afterward?

Does anyone know when the fall school year officially starts?

Same as in the US, September. Don't assume March and September are the ONLY times to get hired. Either you can get hired all year round or you can't.

Thanks for the info. But do you know how long it takes to start work after getting hired?

I assume that I'll apply around June or July for a September job. Then the recruiter or school will take it to the MOE to register me?

So my CBC only has to be valid until that part, and then I can start working 2-3 three months later, right?

1. But do you know how long it takes to start work after getting hired?

This just varies. My start date was in June 2010. I had actually been offered my job in April, with my recruiter having most of my documentation (copies). I had complications getting letters of reference--I was also dealing with a lot of ambivalence about my decision. The school that hired me, and the recruiter, were very patient with me and my situation, and kept the public school position open for me.

I finally had all my documents together by mid-May. Once my recruiter had all my documents (copies), the contract and Notice of Appointment were shipped to me by overnight express. I sent my documents to the consulate in Chicago (due to the Memorial Day three-day weekend, I did not get my passport back, with visa, until about a week later). I was on a plane by June 5th and was at my first day of work on the 7th.

If you have all your documents ready, the time from hiring to starting work can be quite brief, but might take longer.

When I did it, I kept the original CBC until my first week of work, at which time my co-teacher drove me to to the provincial office of immigration to arrange for my Alien Registration Card. At that point my CBC was still within the 6 months.

I suppose the practice might be different now.

Processing times, after you sign a contract, vary from 12-21 days (application for the visa confirmation number to getting on the plane).

In your case, 12-21 days from contract to visa run.

Start looking 3-4 months before you want to start work if you are fussy about your employer.

IF you are not fussy and willing to work anywhere, then start looking 30-60 days before you want to start. Since you are already in Korea it will go fast.

You CBC needs to be 6 calendar months or less from date of issue to the date immigration gets it for your visa confirmation number application. If you want to start working in Sept then you need to have your CBC in hand by July.

NOTHING will happen until you have it in your hot hands.
There is always the option of working (illegally) on your D-visa. There is work and there are employers willing to hire you if they don't need to worry about your visa or accommodation.

Processed in February (zero). In March: 1 month old. In April: 2 months old...May (3), June (4), July (5). August: 6 months old.

So, maybe aim for processing in April, so it's good through October.

My current practice is to have a new CBC in process every 6 months or even more frequently (I bet they planned it this way, too). I do it the slow way, too, but you never know when one will come in handy.

I'm trying to understand this all as well. Everywhere keeps saying to get your CBC as soon as possible, but then the issue of it being valid by the time you work comes into play.

So if I'm understanding everything correctly, I aim to apply in September for GEPIK, which would mean, if hired, I'm looking at working in March of 2013.

Therefore the CBC should be processing by September 2012? Does this also include it getting apostilled? Will it mess me up in terms of applying for a job at the same time?

I guess the easiest way of saying it is, applying in September to work in March 2013. When is the best time to send off my money/letter for my CBC so that I have it in time to work (if hired) and have it not affect my application procedure?

Thanks in advance.

NOT valid when you start work.

YES, Valid when you apply for the visa confirmation number (could be up to 90 days before you start work).

The problem arises because of the delays in obtaining the CBC (depending on where you are from).

If you are a Canadian in Canada it takes about 2 weeks to process and get certified.

If you are from the UK, Aus or NZ the process for processing and getting the apostille are about 7-21 days.

If you are in the States it is a nightmare 'cause your system is broken and delays of MONTHS are common. Good news is that the clock starts on the issue date and NOT the date of application for the CBC.

Is the issue date basically when they finish with it and mail it to you? If that's the case, would it be cool if I sent off for it now, since as you said, States-wise it's a mess and would probably take forever? The CBC is basically the only thing I'm tweaking on, because all the other documents have bee fairly easy and straight forward.

Sorry if that's a stupid question, the only other person I know who did a CBC was my grandmother for her job, but her job is here in the States and they only needed her to do it once.

If you are American and apply now (by mail) it will take a couple months before the FBI actually issues it. April issue date means it is good until sometime in October.

You also need to remember that it needs an apostille so that means apply now and ready for May/June and valid until Oct for the visa application process.
