Hello all. I am interested in teaching english in South Korea but I have heard from some people that in order to get the working visa I need to be in my home country first and then other people say it doesnt matter. I have been travelling for quite a while and would like to go straight to south korea from southeast asia. I will have all of my documents sorted (background check, transcripts/diplomas all notarized and apostilled) in the next couple of weeks except for the health check (im assuming I can do that abroad??). So if anyone has any insight into this please let me know, I would rather not have to pay for a flight back to the US first if it isn't necessary.

If you've never had an E-series visa for South Korea, then you must have an interview at a South Korean consulate in your home country. There is a consulate in Guam, a US territory, so you don't have to fly all the way back to the US mainland.

As with almost everything else in South Korea, there is the law and then there is what's actually done. The people telling you that it doesn't matter very well may have lucked out and experienced the latter case. For planning purposes, you should definitely make your decisions on what's stated by the Korean government and not what other people have experienced in the past. Otherwise, you might end up broke and stuck somewhere.

As stated above, Guam is always an option for a US citizen for a first visa.

If you are RESIDENT (have a proper work visa where you are?) in a 3rd country you can get an E2 visa there.

IF you are a tourist in a 3rd country you may or may not be able to obtain an (first) E2 visa there.

The "self medical" questionnaire you do at home.
You have the actual medical in Korea AFTER you enter on an E2 and before you get your ARC.
