I had a late night run in with a Korean guy around 50 yrs. old Saturday night.
We were both approaching Family Mart and I openly the door first...
but as I did, we look at each other and he looks over my face for about a good 2-3 seconds and noticed I'm Western and lets out this "Aaaaaaiiiish."
Like a "You piece of trash, why did I have to see you tonight," kind of sigh; just a blatant, racist, "get the F outta my country already," sigh.
I was taken back by it for a second. I was thinking why did he just do that? I let him go in first, and I smiled at him.
I then let out a real loud sigh like, "When will these people accept me living in their country?"
I thought why bother, but this kind of nonsense doesn't fly with me no matter what age you are, and ESPECIALLY when I held the door for you and tried to exchange pleasantries and smiled.
I can never see (nor witnessed) this sort of thing happening in America where I lived--not this kind of situation. I lived in a typical Cleveland suburb. I could never see someone looking at my Korean wife and just getting a disgusted look on their face and sigh at her mere existence in their presence.
I've seen koreans say or give my wife some dirty looks, but this is really the first bit of racism by a stranger (that I've heard or understood--there was probably many in the past but I didn't understand it) I've seen directed right at me in my two years living here.
The look on his face and his utter disdain and disgust at the very sight of me made me feel like filth. I know this isn't the "biggest" act of racism, but given the situation, it was totally uncalled for and made me HOT!
People, stand up for yourselves and don't let people walk all over you.
So, what would you have done in this situation.

A person married into this country, owns a house and have been here for 2 years "officially" removes the newbie status.
Thanks for reading, though.
Now go troll the countless other threads you've been known here for. |

Just because you got married and lived here for two years DOESNT warrant you being part of this country. No matter what you do you are still a foreigner to them. And just because an Ahjushi did the sigh doesnt mean he was being a douche or whatever. He could have been having a horrible day, he could be a pride old fart, or just didnt want anyone to hold the door for him as a way to cling to his last bit of self esteem. For you to do your action, I mean cmon really? Even if you are having a bad day, you are STILL a guest in this country and again two years doesnt hold a match to people born and raised in this country.
I think your title for this rant/rave is a bit misleading eh? |

Just a fun thought experiment: imagine this took place in your home country. I visible minority holds the door for a native and is greeted with disdain outside of a small convenience store. Picture both parties. I feel worse for the native than the foreigner because he's obviously an unhappy person.
It's annoying to be treated badly because of your race. I hate it as much as anyone. But when it does happen, it always seems to come from a deeply unhappy or insecure person.
Don't let it eat you up! Fighting! |

Well, Chris, I thank GOD I am not a citizen of this country. I'm proud of where I came from.
And the adjusshi wasn't having a bad day at all. I saw him yacking it up and laughing with 3 of his friends outside Family Mart just before he left them to go into the store.
I am an F2 Chris, so I AM NOT a guest, I am a legal resident of Korea and wish to be treated like one. Do you even know what you are talking about?
Maybe you and troll boy up top like being mistreated by the locals. I prefer to show my displeasure. Being out of line would be showing him my "rocks" which I would never do anyway. |

The only time I did anything other than ignoring it was a few weeks ago. I play on a football team with some of the teachers at my school in a small league. Anyway there was this guy who kept calling me a "yankee F""k" (even though im not american he kicked me a few times and kept standing on my feet. There were also some insults in Korean thrown at me. Some of my team told him to shut up but he didn't care. Towards the end of the match he slid tacked me going straight for my feet, took me out of it. Then I got up and regained my balance he was laugh so I started to square up to him shouting " you think its f**king funny?" the usual bravado, just stalling for time trying to figure out what im going to do next. When I go up close to him others from my team had run up and were splitting it up. Good thing too because the guy wasn't backing down. I sat out the remaining 10 minutes of the match and limped home.
Other than that time I just let it go and don't usually think about it. I think that the only reason i got that annoyed that time was because I was tired and when your playing a fast paced sport sometimes you just do something before thinking about it. I actually felt a little embarrassed when I was at school the next Monday.
No one likes it when it happens, but there is little to be achieved from "standing up" to one or two racist ajoshiis or adjumas. Furthermore foreigners in my home country get far worse a time than I have here. (Okay im white so i get it easy compared to other races) |

The proper thing for you to have done was to give the uppity native a sound thrashing. Two years you have not been long in Korea and you have never gotten attitude from some middle aged korean man. Congratulations! Your first. It's all part of it son. After awhile you do not even notice. If you think Koreans are going to change, you got some time to wait on that. probably just didn't like your face. or maybe he had something else on his mind. Planes leave that go to the U.S. everyday. |

If you wanna play it that you are a legal resident of korea, LEARN THE LANGUAGE and learn to understand the people.
1st off im an F4 so yeah i know what im talking about when i talk about my visa and other visas. You are an F2 if you divorce you will have to leave. And you MARRIED into a visa, so id say a MARRIED guest.
2nd Your getting your panties in a knot because an ajusshi (notice there is NO D in that right?) gave an Aish. Can you say that wherever your home country, that you never gave that look to someone who didnt look native to you?
3rd I think the fact that you got so worked up over something an older guy did says something about your personality and the fact that you got so worked up over my comment. I suggest anger management or learning yoga or something similar ok?
Ive never been mistreated by koreans in this country, but i guess thats only cuz im an F4 right? Or maybe its because im not a dick. Incase you didnt notice people can notice and sense that deposition from people.
But yeah you seem like a regular model citizen. Dont we all get pissed off for an ajusshi saying "aish" hahah |

Does this plane ride come with a guaranteed job for me and wife and a mother in law that will take care of our baby when we're working those jobs, lol??
But I disagree, I am a pretty observant person and catch these things whenever and however they are directed at me.
I just don't like the belief that I should take this blatant disrespect and racist behavior--from anyone. |

I AM learning the language--and what does that have to do with my particular situation? There were no words spoken, but everything was evidently clear by what little grunt he did make.
Tell me the reason for "Aiish!" Chris. Why did he do it after surveying my facial features and basically regarding me as trash on the spot? I'll tell you. Because he saw I was foreigner and he got his "panties" tied in a bunch and couldn't contain his racist animosity toward me.
Did I start it? No.
Did I cause him to react this way? No.
Was I out of line opening the door, letting him go through first and giving him a slight nod/bow and a smile? Of course not.
If someone has that attitude, they SHOULD get called out for it.
And thank you for calling me a model citizen. After all, I buy food from the street vendors when I'm not hungry to help sustain their living, I volunteer with my wife in the community, and I open the doors for people and greet strangers on the street with a smile.
What did I do CHRIS to deserve this?
I don't even know why you are arguing this point. Many Koreans I know "who have been living here their whole lives" (adult students of mine) have told me that some Koreans are in fact ridiculously racist and that I shouldn't tolerate it.
But some how the apologist in you says otherwise.
You must be smarter than all of us, right, CHRIS?

And you are wrong again. You say I am a married guest. That's wrong CHRIS. I am a LEGAL RESIDENT of Korea. Call it what it is and stop trying to minimize my status in this country.
Furthermore he wasn't commenting on my "personality." What personality was on display or how was I being a "dick" (I believe that was what your were insinuating)? That I nodded, smiled and opened the door for him? He was "commenting" on the fact that I am a foreigner and let out a racist sigh.
Why am I even arguing with you, you are clearly drunk and cannot follow the logic, or just plain dumb and incapable of doing so.
Either way, I'm done with you.
Have a good night. |

it hasn't happened to me for ages, but i hope that next time it does, i'll have the presence of mind to smile, wink, and blow the offender a kiss. i'm pretty sure a big white man doing that would horrify an old-school ajeossi more than saying 씨발 and the like. |
