There was this one time I was at a public park in Hongdae. I had just finished jogging and I was toweling myself off, when an ajosshi walked past me. He dared to make eye contact with me, so I knew he must be a racist jerk. Plus he said something to his friends and laughed. I couldn't hear what, but they must have been talking badly about me.
I decided to retaliate by twisting my towel up and snapping it at him. When I hit him square in the buttocks, he leapt into the air and howled. I was surprised at how girlish he was acting until I realized that there was a metal ring at the end of my towel. At that point he got really pissed and started chasing me with his friends.
I ran into the public restroom, where they had me trapped. About six Koreans blocked my exit, so I thought I was done for. Then out of no where, a seemingly other worldly traveler intervened. He had various Korean babes hanging all over him. In one stroke, he dismissed these harlots and summoned other waygooks to his side.
One of these fellows saw my predicament and immediately dropped his pants and produced a dookie without hesitation. While I was immensely impressed by this young man's bowel control, I took the opportunity to run out of there as everyone was distracted by the steaming Captain's log.

Dodge, basically you interpreted a sigh (aish) and a brief glance and from that extrapolated a lot of things.
Seriously, that particular Korean man could be racist, or it could be a dozen other things. You were frustrated and thats understandable but lets not go overboard with this!
Aish in Korean can mean a heck of a lot of things by the way and since you are still learning the language its best you get that now!
As for you being a resident of Korea...YOU ARE. However, if you expect EVERY random Korean to treat you nicely, you are in for a very rough ride. Would you expect everyone back home to treat you nicely, accept you and be nice? I am sure that the answer is no...so why would you expect any different in a country where you are a visible minority?
These things need to be put in perspective if you wish to remain sane and be happy in Korea. The first mistake may new learners of Korean do is extrapolate meaning based on limited knowledge of Korean, especially in a situation like the one your described. Even if the guy was a racist turd, ask yourself what would be gained by confronting him?
Standing your ground is one thing, reacting to a sigh and a look is something else.... |

Don't you think there's an in between state......permanent resident.
When I go on vacation to countries other than Korea or my home country, I do indeed see myself as a guest and will act accordingly......but a lot of people live in Korea for years on end, are married to Koreans, invest in Korea, raise their children in Korea.......it seems ungenerous to consider them as just a guest.
Of course, my take on this has no bearing on the actually important thing, how Koreans see foreigners here. Obviously they don't consider when they see us around if we are tourists, US military, businessmen on a trip, ESL teachers, permanent residents....whatever........of course they're not to be expected to. |

Man some of you guys need to follow my lead and not post on here much anymore.
Seriously, it's bad for the mind and soul, all the trolling, backstabbing, baiting, talking past each other, trying to win arguments. I logged on the other day after no posting for two weeks and didn't even post as the feeling of reading through threads made me feel actually physically bad, like a reformed crack addict or alcy that has a slip up.
That said, hell I am white English and had worse treatment than that in Oregon, a guy getting all in my face and telling me 'We kicked your asses man and we could do it all over again if we wanted to....'
I was like, 'sorry, I wasn't around in 1600 whenever, I'm only 24 years old.'
Anyway yeah pat ghb is wrong as usaul, that adjoishi the op encountered was one of those miserable old gits that probably don't hate foriegners and aren't any more xenephobic than the general population (cough cough) but was drunk, tired or in a bad mood and used the waygookin to give him something to express his inner bitterness on to just like small minded idiots in any country. |

The guy was playing football. A Korean guy was verbally insulting and physically abusing him. The Korean guy was playing mind games. I advised the guy to return the insults. Sometimes you need to stick up for yourself. An old man muttering "aish" under his breath isn't worth responding to. A guy you are playing football with who is being abusive needs to be put in his place.
When you mature you will figure out that each unique situation deserves a unique response.
Anyway, I'm done. This thread and your trolling bore me. |
when I mature? I pray to God that you are NOT an English teacher. In any situation violence should only be a LAST resort. Instead of "advising the guy" (which im sure you did in an intelligent manner) you could have just stepped in between and told him to knock it off.
Your response to me was stupid and reminscent of a troll. Thanks for trying though |

Have you ever played any kind of competitive sport? You can't let someone do hard tackles at you and not do anything about it. In hockey, if someone is constantly slashing the back of your legs, you don't put up with that either. It's not acceptable for someone to keep smacking you in a public place, why should the same behaviour be allowed in sports? |

The best way to put someone in their place who is being abusive when playing football is to let your feet do the talking and simply play better than him. That will piss off him more !!
Just compare the styles and footballing achievements of Vinny Jones and Lionel Messi as an example !! |

That's Oregonians for you. My family went to visit Oregon one time, and went to a church service up there. No joke, when my mother was talking to another woman, and the woman asked where we were from, my mom said "California," and the woman straight up rolled her eyes and turned around.
So don't worry, they hate everyone up there.
Sorry, just had to share that story. |

Don't hold the door open. Just walk in. Problem solved. He doesn't give a sh*t about you, don't give a sh*t about him, people don't open doors for each other in Korea. Do you also tip when you eat out cause that happens in the states as well? I doubt it. |
Koreans have opened the door for me. Most Koreans have been very civil to me. I have encountered prejudice in this country. I recall encountering that from a young kid, but I let him know in a non-hostile way by giving him a dirty look for a long while that he was wrong, but, then, gave a friendly good-bye to make a point.
The OP makes it seem like horrible prejudice doesn't exist in North America that's not so overt. Maybe not in his part of Cleveland. If you're not a minority in North America you're less likely to experience overt prejudice. We're visible minorities here. A Korean-American I knew talked about getting a little of that in Indiana, though not so much. An Arab-Christian in Indiana is suffering from brain damage because a nice, white bully thought he was a Muslim. I remember in Texas a white co-worker having a black eye because he was riding his bike in a Hispanic area. A Canadian woman who has a biracial child was told "You gave birth to that!" Pappa Johns just had a scandal because a worker labeled a Korean-American "Lady Chinky Eyes" on a receipt because he didn't know her name.
I am sorry about what happened to him. I'd be angry. It's insulting. He was tryin' to be nice. I wouldn't expect someone to insult me because I was of another race and opened the door to him. That never happened to me in any place I've been to, actually. I don't know any foreigner who has experienced the same. I can understand it's disturbing for the OP.
However, he probably made it sound in the eyes of people who have been here for many years that North America has mild prejudice compared to South Korea; that prejudice here against foreigners is shocking. It's not so much. Yes, it's annoying. |
