You're not going abroad to work as an engineer, are you? We're instructors. If you're going to be an instructor, then you shouldn't ignore punctuation and syntax when you have to encourage EFL learners to use proper syntax and punctuation. I think the vast majority would agree.
Furthermore, if you knew you were coming to Korea, how hard was it to research how to properly do your paperwork? So many of us went into a lot of effort to ensure we knew what we were doing. I know it sounds like I am slamming you, but we need people who are going to act professional while teaching and pay attention to important details. |

my recruiter told me to use a channeler. was i naive for trusting my recruitment agency? maybe. regardless, the fact is the recruiter told me to use a channeler and was wrong. i was also told by the embassy that i would have to rely on my recruiter or job for information about visa processing. in short, it wasn't my mistake and the agency is going to pay for the new FBI check that i am getting, just in case. it does, of course, make me leery of using this recruiter.
one more thing: while i appreciate the helpful advice, please don't be presumptuous and insulting. i tutor ESL. i've done so for years -- probably longer than you've been an ESL teacher. i scored perfectly on the language portion of the ACT. i am excellent teacher. my clients range from children to doctoral candidates. korea will be very lucky to have me. |

Actually, in the end, it's your responsibility to be aware of immigration procedures and how to follow the correct procedures. Some people in Korea who you'll deal with don't know Sam from Adam, but it's still on you to know what you're supposed to do. The information is out there.
I don't buy the idea of passing the blame to the recruiter. They just want to make the money, and some of them are not that good. They're not recruiters for Fortune 500 companies. This is EFL in South Korea.
I mean you could have still done an FBI check to be on the safe side.
You can blame the embassy or what not, but the information is on the websites and so many websites. I called the consulate in Houston, and I had no problems. I did consult other EFL veterans in Korea since I was away for 2 years doing my M.A.
This is, actually, not so new. The FBI requirement has been around since the beginning of 2011. The recruiter is not responsible for your visa. You and the school are responsible for that. You've taught longer than me? I've taught for about 9 years, and that includes 4 years of EFL. You're saying that Korea will be lucky to have you, but you don't follow basic capitalization rules; they seem unimportant to you. I've never heard of anyone going through a channeler or what not. It's the first I've heard someone do that.
You're responsible for getting your paperwork when it comes to immigration, not the recruiter. Immigration doesn't care about the recruiters. |
