so do we know what causes colon cancer? why it's so high in New Zealand but USA is not even in the top 20 countries?
what are kiwis eating which other countries are not? |
Lamb of course!
That's it folks: it's the lamb that's the cause. Nothing more, nothing less. Case closed.
(kidding of course)
Seriously though, red meat and processed meats (ie deli meats) might contribute to the higher rate, as do alcohol consumption and smoking. So hmm, maybe the increase in consuming Korean BBQ and soju drinking raised that rate? Naw, that can't be it . Gotta be all that western food!

Way back in the 80's, I remember people talking about a study which showed the combined effect of eating processed meats and drinking
alcohol. Either of the above alone did not up the cancer risk that much,
but when the 2 are combined it became very dangerous.
Something to do with the chemical soup that results from ingesting processed meats and alcohol.
Whether this is "Western" or not, it is certainly un-healthy. |

Yeah. It doesn't make sense. The generation developing colon cancer now would have eaten 99% Korean food most of their lives.
If there's one thing Koreans can't bear to consider it's that their beloved foods maybe aren't as healthy as they've been brainwashed to believe they are. |
I frequently told my Korean wife that I take issue with Korean mass media blaming "western food (서양식 음식)" for increasing obesity, cancer, and others and it should be substituted with "fast food".
But I also take issue with your accusation that Koreans are "brainwashed" to beliving their foods are healthy. If you bother to watch Korean TV shows like 생로병사 and other health-related TV shows, you will frequently hear that many Korean foods, including their beloved Kimchi, are flavored with unhealthy amount of salt. |

But unhealthy amounts of salt is the only thing they'll admit to. Otherwise all of their spam soups, spam and kimchi fried rices, and spam sushi rolls are perfectly healthy.
People seldom talk about the overindulgence of plain white rice, the large amount of cooking oil used (only Chinese food is oily, doesn't matter how greasy some Korean dishes end up), or the fatty cuts of meat enjoyed nigh universally.
It's all just a little bit salty.
And yes, spam is Korean food by this point. |

Like the two posters have mentioned above salt could be a factor. Many processed foods have a great deal of salt as well. |

Uhhh, sorry, but plenty of Koreans out there are watching their fat intake, cholesterol, told to avoid instant foods, and are aware of the perils of empty carbs and white rice.
Seriously, I must have been hallucinating when I see all the women go super small on the rice bowl at school...
The big thing though isn't the food, it's the diet, in particular how frequently certain foods are eaten and how much is eaten.
Pizza is an occasional treat, not a staple. A small dixie cup of cola is a nice dessert, not a main beverage. Of course everyone loves a value meal at Mc D's and the occasional pig out, especially the kids. And they'll pig out on Korean or Western food.
Most foreigners think every Korean meal at night is like some sort of teacher's dinner with samgyupsal, noodles, and bar hopping and anju having. No, its fish stew and pickled vegetables. |

The women with small rice bowls also have small bowls of everything else. The grass is green and women diet. They are hardly holding protest signs proclaiming the dangers of Korean food. |

"You can't hardly find" is hardly good English
and
Your opinion based on your experience isn't really information in the large sense. It is anecdotal at best. I'm southern. The primary diet here may not be all that healthy, but we do not eat any more processed food than anyone else. Southern food does not lend itself to processing. It's usually made from scratch. Your opinion may not be "bad", but it is faulty.

I'm Southern too and I know what I see. My grandparents still raise their own garden. They never buy vegetables. But the people that don't have a garden buy everything from the store that has pesticides, packaged in a box or can. The Old South where things are made from scratch is almost non-existent. It's a trip to Wal-mart twice a month to buy Bisquick, Banquet dinners, and processed bread and sandwich meat.
What state are you from and what is the population of the nearest town or city you grew up near? |

It seems obvious the Western science-experiment diet causes cancer. |

This. And 3 bottles of soju a night is NOT moderate drinking.
The rise in cancer is primarily due to eating greasy junk (namely samgyupsal), foods too high in sodium content (most soups and kimchi) and too many carbs (white rice). And not enough fresh, unadulterated vege (ever notice every type of vege in Korea seems to be cooked in some way, besides the lettuce you have with your fatty piece of meat?). This and excessive drinking. If you're drunk, you drank too much. End of story. If you're even slightly tipsy, you drank too much. When you get tipsy that's your body telling you to stop drinking.
Plus I bet air pollution and smoking have more to do with the rise in cancer than the so-called "western" diet.

Obvious to some, but not to the health professionals.
The cancer institute actually says that high colon and stomach cancer in Japan and korea is mostly due to over consumption of fermented foods and salty foods etc.
Certain posters with an agenda here will love to posit that it is western diets to blame, but the health authorities know different.
Gotta love objective, information that isn't based on national prejudice!

When a fat person comes up to you and tells you about a great new diet do you listen? |

Ha ha, you're trying hard, but failing at a rapid rate in all of the threads you're active in.
Shouldn't think your run will last long. I've noticed a few posters whom have indicated realising which ilk of internet poster type you are from.
As per my post - it is in respone to CANCER rates in KOREA being blamed on western diets, when really in large part it is due to their traditional food preparation methods and too much sodium and, further more the thread is nothing to do with obesity, which is obviously due to eating too much crap in too large portions.
And yes, I do trust the Cancer Institue, British Journal of Cancer over an angry Korean American / other nationality - whom is not an ESL teacher, with an axe to grind that spends his time on forums trying to create flame wars and bashng anything non Korean.
That's about as far as I'm willing to bother communicating with you. Ciao. |
