Then again panthermodern,
Teachers do not have to sell their bodies to drunk or smelly old guys.
Teachers do not get beat up by a pimp because they didn't bring enough cash in on a given evening.
Teachers do not risk their health.
Teachers do not have to gove most of their earnings to a pimp.
Teachers are respected by their students (most of the time).
The worse insult a teacher might get from his kids is "teacher babo".
Teachers get free (except for utilities) acomodations.
Teachers get free airfare.
Teachers have a lot of disposable income.
Teachers can leave and go back to their home countries anytime they want.
Want more? |

| Check out the Off-Topic Forum for a funny take on this hooker-teacher bit. There was a recent thread started by Manner of Speaking. |

I never did feel like a language ho- till last night when I made the final arrangements to leave my school. I gave them enough warning to hire another teacher, worked my butt off in all my classes, and then when I was waiting for the release letter, they slapped me with a nearly five million won bill!
According to them I not only had to repay my airfare and recruiter fee, but my replacements too! and in some bizzare form of new math- the difference between the two figures. ( no wonder the school is going broke with these mathematical geniuses at the helm) All of a sudden I understood how women get roped into prostitution here- it's that kind of math, and they're simply to afraid to challenge it.
After one hell of a scene I ended up forfeiting my last months pay, but I got the release letter. For the record- the ministry of labour 's advice was simply to roll over and play nice with my "owners" ( their actual words!) if I wanted a release letter.
This is what you get for trying to play straight. .

That sucks.
One more mark against hagwons in my opinion. These stories are too common, and contrary to some people's views I think many of these types of situations go unreprted on message boards.
It's a combination of Korean business ethics, small business ownership, saturated market, and foreigner/Korean relationships that creates these f*cked up situations. P*ss on your old boss. |

My last position charged 340 000 won for 8 one hour lessons.
Each lesson was 50 minutes so thats 42 500 an hour.
I taught half the lesson (so thats 21 250 won) and I was paid 8 500 won
The Korean instructor that taught the first half was paid less.
So, the school's cut was 12 750 from my share of the lesson.
AND, if the student were absent, I got 2 000 won, they kept everything else (no refunds for the students).
Basically, I generated 340 000 won worth of revenue a day and I was lucky to clear 120 000 won / day.
I also recieved a housing allowance which was about equal to 12 500 / teaching day, so that's 132 500 won per day.
340 000 / 132 500 = 2.6
The school made 260% what I did.
From my point of view the pimp was keeping most of the money.
The pimp was doing quite well.
So, I walked. |

panther,
What you mentionned is not pimping...its basic business.
The owner of the school should make more then you, much more.
Why? Because it is his money he put into the school.

You did not generate 340 000 won a day unless you actively participated in the enrollment or in the publicity to attract students.
In the end we are teachers, not investors or shareholders. We work for an agreed upon wage that we negociated in a contract.
The owner of the school (like any business owner on the planet) has a right to make more because he owns the place and invested in it.
If you want to increase your percentage of the business's profits, then invest in the business and become a shareholder....otherwise what you are, like all teachers on the planet is an employee.
Finally, if the hakwon gig's structure irritates you money wise, get a public school job where profit is not and issue. |

Homer:
What if a Madame put money into a brothel?
You are right it (EFL) is a business, as is prositution.
I was just countering your point that EFL intructors are unlike hookers because Pimps take alot of the money.
Pimps and Hagwon bosses have a lot in common.
As do any who make profit from the labour other other by simply providing as facility to do the before mentioned labour.
Thats the way the world works. |

Good point panther.
But, sadly thats just the boss-employee dynamic that holds true in much of the job market around the world. |

g-ese,
Many times, people get screwed because they don't inform themselves properly or stick up for themselves. |
