I need proof of US residency before I leave Korea in middle March, or else I'll have to pay income tax. IRS form 8802 is the application for a residency certificate.

The 'calendar years for which certification is requested' is confusing.

I was born in the US and as far as I know... I have been a resident of the US my whole life. I've lived there my whole life except for 2011.

For the purposes of Korean tax policy, do I request proof of residency for the year during which I am working in Korea? Or the year before this?

Requesting for the present year isn't intuitive, because it's the only year during which I've 'resided' outside the US. Yet for Korea's purposes, knowing that I'm legally a US resident during the year I work here seems more relevant.
