I'm going to agree with the OP here. I'm wary about putting anything in writing that isn't official, when it comes to large companies/organizations. I worked for IMOE for a couple of years, and there wasn't anything wrong with the OP's wanting to do it the right way. It didn't matter if the school/training center bosses didn't want to re-hire him. He could have signed the intent to renew, and they could have given him a bad report. He'd have had to sign those same papers, either way, even to say that he didn't want to renew. I was given those renewal forms twice.

Also, IMOE stinks. There are far better places, be they the rare amazingly-great hagwon or the coveted university jobs.

That may be so but the OP clearly creatd more crap for himself and others by being so confrontational. A simple email would not have broken any rules and would have done the job.

Patrick, I can definitely see both sides of the story on this one. The OP can't change what he did. I can see how sending an email would have been easy, but I'm also aware of the resentment that he probably felt. It's a tough call. He did make it harder for himself, of course, but I, personally, had a horrible experience with the IMOE coordinator, and was treated like a zoo animal or pet by my main handler, even though I was more highly qualified. It can build up. That doesn't mean that one should have a tantrum, but I do know the feeling of built up rage. At least he didn't go Hulk on her! All he did was consistently request the proper forms to do what was needed.

Ah well... It happens. I hope the best for the OP.

Yup! That, and I happen to love apes. I had the pleasure of going to Howletts (sp?) animal reserve near Canterbury a couple of weeks ago, and got to meet some of the gorillas. It was great!

OP- next time pretend you never read your email and ask her verbally for what you need. If she throws a tantrum, go to where other people can see her flipping out so you have a witness and she can't alter the story against you.

Good luck

I thought you were using it to make fun of other posters on here, honestly. Like TUM had, but no text. I'm glad the reason is far less nefarious.

As for the topic, geh, you really have to know where to pick your battles working in Korea. I do my best to not rock the boat over small stuff so that, when the time comes and I know it'll be rocked, and the wake that is made isn't nearly as bad. Diplomacy goes a long way here in office politics.

Would it have killed you to ask nicely to read the documents instead of shooting down her request for an answer?

You're right. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that, at some point during my first year (yes, I was renewed!) I shouted at my handler that I was NOT her pet waygookin

Thinking about it now, the OP could have written an email that was way too eloquent for the handler to understand. I am usually a big fan of passive aggression.

To be fair, at some point, she refused to tell me the name of the fish market to which we'd visited earlier in my year. It's the big one in Incheon. I didn't know enough Korean at the time to be able to ask a taxi driver to take me there (I still often forget the exact name, but just say Incheon fish market in Korean and they know. This was something I wasn't able to do my first couple of months here.) She told me that she wouldn't tell me the name, because she didn't want me to go alone because there was "a big road" and she didn't want me crossing the road. I flew halfway around the world to work, alone, and I couldn't be trusted to cross the frigging street?!

Huh? Little 'ol me? Make fun of other posters? Never! Rather think of me as a source of light and joy, skipping through the forums dispensing gems of wisdom and enlightenment all around.

I am willing to bet that if that email had come from another foreigner, the OP would have no problems emailing back:

"I'm planning on renewing. Can you send the document right away so I can look them over before I sign?"

But, because it came from the Korean, the defense mechanism kicked: "What the hell is this? Is she trying to screw me over? I've read on Dave's about Korean Teachers trying to pull power trips and shenanigans."

I, in no way, can see the OP's point of view. Its a freaking email. Its an intent to renew form. She just wants to know if you are staying or not. What is the big deal?

When I was volunteering last month I would ask some of the other volunteers, "Hey, are you going to be here tomorrow or is today your last day?" Should I have written up a formal document complete with a Dojang stamp requesting whether or not that person was going to be here the next day?

It is weird if she can't take a verbal 'yes' or 'no' or she announces that there must be a committee hearing to decide on whether or not to give him the document. The OP sent an email in three lines asking for the document and she flips out- that isn't right either!

Willing to bet that they weren't very friendly before this happened-

KT's email:

I received an email this afternoon from the KT who acts as the liason for the NETs regarding working contract.etc.. In the email, she informed me that she has the official documents from IMOE for contract renewal- the Application for Renewal, the Self Health Check, The Report on Teaching Experience. In the email, she asks me "If you want to make a renewal with XXX, pls. let me know a.s.a.p."

A tactful response:

"I'm pretty sure I am going to renew, but I'd like to see the documents first. Can I take a look at them before I give a final OK?"

Instead, the OP:

Quote:
I told her that I was not comfortable sending my notice of intention to her by email. I informed her "I wish to follow the proper procedure - having done many many times before. In order to follow the proper procedure, I require the application for renewal: on it, it asks whether you wish to check the appropriate box for yes[renew] or no."

As the OP mentioned, she is the liaison between the office of education and him. She asked him a simply question: "Do you want to renew?" and he fires back with "I'm not comfortable telling you in an email".

Yes, the KT could have done a better job of asking in the email. Like attaching the appropriate renewal documents with the email. However, I think its ridiculous for the OP to "butt heads" with the KT over something so trivial.

This situation could've easily gone the simple way of responding back "Sure, I think I'm gonna renew." or "No, I'm not going to renew."

That would've been it. End of story. No tantrum by KT. OP gets his renewal papers for him to sign or he chooses not to renew. Why it turned into a pissing match between him and his KT is beyond me.
