Hi all, I am looking to get a Korea job for the Fall-Winter 2012 semester (August departure) and I figured I would start a general thread for people in the same situation.

My biggest questions involve TEFL. It is my understanding that GEPIK contracts now require a TEFL cert (and that it's something you basically have to have to get a job now). Is http://www.teflonline.net/ the best place to go? Is a 100 hour online course a good option if you are only concerned about getting a job, and not so much about making extra money that the more involved courses might get you? (I will add that I planned on doing a TEFL anyway, for at least a little preparation. I have a friend who got a contract with only a BA, and he's said he's been fine, but I just wouldn't want to go in cold).

Thanks for the help!

Online courses are basically useless.

If you want a good grounding in classroom teaching practise, criticism, methodology and philosophy then go for the CELTA.

Well, I'm sure online classes pale in comparison to in-class, but you did take my quote out of context. I said a good option *if you simply want to get a job*. Now, I do want to take a certification class partly because I'd like some insight, and I do not plan on blowing off the job or treating it like vacation, but I am doing this mainly for my own experience (I haven't traveled much) and because I'd like to pay off the rest of my school loans.

So there's that and the fact that I am very strapped for cash. The online courses tend to be much cheaper.

I'd like to get a public school job. Will they see in-class/higher hour courses as just incentive to pay you more, or will a 100 hour online certification be largely frowned upon? Will I be able to find a job with one? Thanks for the help.

I have been doing the 120 hour ITTT course. As far as I know, it is (hopefully) recognized by the government of Korea and will give you the exact same pay bump as a CELTA would. I was also recommended this course by some experienced teachers who said it was surprisingly helpful. I just finished the 4th unit (out of 20) and it is pretty comprehensive and time consuming.

Like you, I was considering doing the CELTA but was restricted financially and geographically. From what I've researched, Korean employers don't really distinguish between people who apply with CELTAs or TEFLs regardless of how they obtained it (as long as it is over 100 hours). It seems like a lot of experienced teachers are split 50/50 regarding how useful the CELTA is teaching children in Korea.
