Can somebody please recommend a decent doctor, anywhere in Gangnam? I have been to several different places, and they either cannot prescribe my medication or have left me feeling that they have little idea what they are doing. They never really seem to pay attention to me; they just glance at my information, maybe listen to my breathing for a minute and get me out as fast as possible. I take medication for asthma daily, and I need to periodically get prescriptions written for it. I just went to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription from the last doctor I went to, and she prescribed me the wrong dose. It's a good thing I know my medication well enough to recognize it; it could have killed me. I just want a competent doctor who will take the time to write my prescription properly.

I am a little mad right now, since my schedule makes it difficult to find time to go the doctor, and because of this one's careless mistake and the coming holiday, I will probably have to go several days without any medication, which means dealing with severe asthma symptoms. With the quality of air in Seoul, this can be life-threatening.

Simply take your current "correct" prescription to the doctor and ask for a replacement script.

There is NOTHING you are taking that is life threatening even at double or even triple doses (but your salbutamol can give you a pretty good rush).

Asthma is nothing new here (chances are that at least one kid in each of your classes has it) and most meds are easily available (everything from singulair to prednisone, seretide to becolovent, and salbutamol nebs to simple inhalers) at almost every yak-guk in the country.

They are all cheaper than in the States as well.

Well, Advair/Seratide does come with a warning that it can increase the risk of asthma-related death, so it might well be life-threatening. I asked my American doctor about the higher dose stuff once, because he had some free samples of it, and he said there was no way I should take that and that it could be very dangerous.

As for taking my prescription in to the doctor, that's exactly what I did, and she still carelessly wrote up the wrong thing. I am going to go back to have it corrected as soon as I can, but I don't plan on going back next time I need a script. I have gotten my stuff here before, so I know it's available and cheap, I just want a doctor who will treat me more professionally than this.

Ask your doctor if he will write you a note "recommending" you to a primary care fascility. If he or she hesitates complain that you think your a foreigner and that your condition and prescription are complicated. If he or she hands you that note, than you can go to Samsung hospital near Irwon station. The doctors there are about as good as they get in Korea - IMHO - world class.

If you go there without a note, and you DON'T go to their International clinic, you will pay a premium - I'm going to guess an additional 30%.

If you go to the International Clinic, you will probably pay American prices and Korean insurance won't cover it.

Thanks for the information; I may try that. Will they understand what I mean by "primary care," or is there a Korean term I should know?

If your doctor doesn't understand "primary care" just say you want to go to a larger hospital and you want a paper giving you permission. Your doctor will probably figure it out. I'm two for two in getting one.
