Martin, like Becker, relies heavily on defectors for his evidence: I cant think of a book that has made more use of their testimony than this one. But he scrupulously checks facts and cross-references stories. Former officers in the CIA say that most North Korean defectors are useless; other officials say they are useful when they first come out, but not if the South Korean agencies get hold of them first.
Natives and foreigners, defectors and visitors speak of the generosity and warmth of the people, and what until the recent catastrophe appears to have been a vibrant collective life. It runs against everything outsiders expect, and Martin asks of a state widely thought to be evil beyond redemption how it can inculcate such values in its people. His interviews with defectors are enlightening on this subject, and he focuses on Western reporters common assumption that handicapped people live miserable lives, hidden from view in nightmarish institutions. Instead, Martin finds that the regime has many programmes for supporting the handicapped (war amputees get the best care).

| But the question is? Why are there defectors? Why so many sneaking into China? I am sure the people are warm and friendly but the people are not what we are talking about. You truly believe that Kim Jong Un does not defecate? That is directly from the North news and was announced to show his divine nature. Have you been to North Korea or any other communist paradise. Shills can be bought, books articles written by these shills be careful of their product. |

Someone seems absolutely delusional about the state of things in the DPRK.
Stout, why not move there and see it first hand. Live there. Enjoy their freedoms and generosity. Prove us all wrong!!
Heck, I'll chip in the the first 10,000won. I'd love to see your bags packed and you going to live there.
I'm sure it'd be a hoot for all involved.
You game?
You up for a sampling of their generosity? |

...Man, u guys take it up with Northway, he's the one who referenced the book.
All I did was quote a review on it, which itself simply quoted a passage from it.
If you've been payin' attention, I've already made it clear that I don't consider NK to be some sorta paradise.
And yeah, I agree with a certain poster about the even-handedness of how this site is monitored. |
