It had been a while since I had a drink at the Geckos next to the subway. Mixed drinks are now 8,500 won?? Several bottled beers are around 9,000 each. I believe tap beer is now 4,000.

That is insane for a bar like that. Has everylace gotten so bad?

Back in the day it had a reputation of being a good place to find Mr. or Ms. Tonight, but at four chunners a Cass, there are certainly better options.

I can count the number of times I've been there on one hand, and even then, I was just following the crowd. I've always thought that place was crazy expensive for what you got.

That's true. Some serious hunting went on in that place, especially on Saturdays. I can honestly say I've been to very few places that had girls as aggressive as some of the ones you'd find at Gecko's. Perhaps Korean blogs six or seven years ago marked it as the place where they could go try out a foreigner for a night in virtual anonymity and pretend nothing happened once the night or weekend was finished.

It's places like Gekko's that give Itaewon a bad name.

Not to mention Seoul Pub, Nashville Extension and a few other dives.

Don't know why, Itaewon bars have more character than almost every other bar on the whole peninsular.

I guess if you grew up on a farm and lead a sheltered life, Itaewon might be 'shocking' but not for me.

I'm an Itaewon defender. Gecko's is just a crappy bar.

It's not what it used to be back in the early 2000's for sure.

Also the staff used to be pretty friendly but now they seem to begrudge taking orders from foriegners and have a lot of attitude. And they got rid of the pool table, so yeah, not much to draw people there, other then, I guess, good seating areas and the food isn't bad and is decent value (at least based on when I was areguylar a few years back) so good for large groups.

But yeah 5k for a red rock? No frigging way. Nashvilles does ob blue on tap for 2500 and half that during happy hour and Wolfhounds and 3alley have better beers.

Personally I don't like those bars anymore anyway as it's all just soldiers and esl teachers and doesn't feel like 'real world.' Was in Shanghai recently and liked the vibes in the expat bars better as there is a wider variety of expat professionals. Or maybe I just passed out of that phase.

You know, when you don't want to feel like you're in an esl bubble all the damned time and just want to feel like an everyday dude in a bar? But it's not possible as all the patrons are esl or army.

Also, since the glory days pre 2007 or so, there is so much more male competition for the laides now that it's not really even great for that sort of action in itaewon anymore, way too much effort and much shorter odds unless you're like just a natural stud.

I wouldn't call it shocking. I'd just call it crap.

Can't fully agree, the prices are the same (4,000 Won for a Cass) or above (9,000 Won for draft Weizen) average Itaewon prices, but the food is pathetic (they may have to find their chef yet) and the experience is clearly made for Koreans looking for a faux Western environment (like the "Irish" pub in Gangnam).

The interior is fantastic and spacious, the heating system works extremely well. No idea why a bar with a German name has staff in kilts (the staff doesn't know either). The metal chairs are right uncomfortable.

My main grief is that (similar to "Deutsches Haus") they do cheat you on the drinks, e.g. a "600 ml draft Weizen" comes in a German (brewery) 500 ml glass (there's a calibration mark on it) and apparently the Hoegaarden you get is just about half of what you thought you ordered. Since bottled Weizen is typically 8,000 Won for a 500 ml bottle (perfectly matched with the glass!) the 9,000 for 600 ml seems a good deal, well it's only if you count the inch of foam on top as beer too.

Gecko's Terrace only works for Summer evenings because they do have a nice view from their "terrace", if you can get a seat. You can listen to the Hamilton Pool techno music and count the people queuing for Taco Bell.

Sin Bin's got Red Rock for 3,500. I'm not a huge fan of the place, but good food and cheap beer are essentially what I look for in an Itaewon dive.
