Recent holidays in Korea:
Christmas: 0 days
Proper New Year: 0 days
Lunar New Year: 2 days
Children's Day(coming up): 0 days
Why does this country have such a pathetic schedule of non-working days? The average time off for lunar new near in China is 2 weeks. The company I work for has many overseas distributors. Their average time off is about a week before Christmas to a week after new year. Why does Korea have to spectacularly suck so bad in this area? Is it business? Nope. The Chinese can manage it. Is it the government? Nope. They actually encourage it to promote a service industry. I have heard that Koreans don't have the imagination to pass the time. They have absolutely no hobbies, sports or leisure activities whatsoever. So they get bored and long for their desks. This is weird and it sucks. |

It depends on when the holiday falls and they don't give days in lieu. One of my student's company also gives today off. Some people I know got friday off as well.
On the other hand, when the holiday falls on a wednesday, I know many companies that will give monday and friday off as well so the employees can have the entire week off.
Your stat holidays in say Canada are only like 9 or 10 days a year (many companies give boxing day, but it's only a stat in one province)
While some companies individually give holidays in various sectors and countries, it isn't the government giving these days off. Depending when all the holidays landed in a given year you could end up with 15 or more days off. Though if they all fall on the wrong days you might only get 5 or 6 off in a given year. |

What a weird post. Name a long holiday in Canada. In Korea, you have two that are three days long, something you don't have in Canada, but they just don't give weekdays off in place of weekends here. That is completely different from no long holidays. Christmas here IS a holiday, and so is the Gregorian New Year's. Lunar New Year's is 3 days, and Children's Day is 1. Just cause they fall on a day you don't work doesn't mean it's 0 days for that holiday.
Koreans have no hobbies, get bored and long for their desks? Really? You realize this makes you come off sounding like a pouting child inventing his own logic rather than any kind of rational person? |

Normally, we get more days, but not this year. I feel bad for the folks who work at hagwons because they especially need those days because their bosses often don't give them much time off, so I can understand people complaing.
However, saying that Koreans don't like sports is ridiculous. It's not a religion in the same way it is in Europe and North America, but they definitely like sports. |

The liesure industry is still developing here (golf courses, theme parks). Expect them to have more time off in future. At some point the government will decide to stop pushing the whole work-work-work mentality.

There is some truth to this because this society has been programmed to be worker bees for the past 50 years.
Hence the surprise and almost derision at times when you want time off or want to go surfing for 2 weeks. You're being irresponsible. Childish. Putting yourself before your job. Deserting your post.

They also have no tradition of travelling abroad. Even the lower classes of the british like to spend 2 weeks every year in Spain. Foreign travel is regarded as a necessary part of a persons development, a legitimate educational goal in itself.
As for korea...give it time. |

Not a religion? Have you seen how much $$$$ people here shell out for mountain climbing/ski/sports gear? And how religiously they practice? Ranges from several hundred to several THOUSAND dollars. |

Sure, there's nothing if you don't count snowboarding, fishing, hiking, theme parks, the theater, museums, the cinema, the beach, concerts, music lessons, ...
The only thing holding you back is yourself. |
