Anyone know a cheap hotel or guest house to stay at in Macau? I am going to be there over the weekend. |

Near the "Senator's Square"(English version), which contains some great Port. architecture, there are "cheap" hotels. By Korean standards, I guess they are cheap. It's the main area in Macau.
About 40 bucks a night will get you a grubby room...minimum of roaches, flickering TV, private bath, filthy carpet...check out time at 10.
Not to put you off...Macau's a great place to spend 2-3 days.... |

That's right, I remember now, but I really believe that the war story at the Macau Museum said that there are several versions. There was some squirmish during some uprising, and the church got burned. I did not find too many people who spoke much Eng. |

I went to Macau last summer, but only for one night. Stayed at the Holiday Inn for about $90. Was a nice break from the places I'd stayed at in HK.
Only had enough time to do a walking tour. I hit a lot of spots, but I'm sure I missed a lot too. Went to the casinos at night, won a bit of money playing poker. Anyway, it's at the top of my list for places I want to visit again. |

It's all about baccarat. That's the main game there. Ninety percent of the tables in the casinos are baccarat. The Venetian is awesome. The Mandarin is an excellent hotel. Great seafood and dim sum. |

Well, good food in general, really. It also help that HK is a one-ferry ride away. Hong Kong is probably one of my top 3 favorite places in the world--some of the best food in the world available 24/7.
As you have probably gathered, food is all I really care about. |

I was recently in Macau after a 5 yr. absence & I have to say, Taipa is the place to hang out.
Macau is, accommodation wise, not the place for the budget traveller. Most budget travellers don't spend more than 3 days at a time there. Apparently there are a few guest houses.

Thanks Mosley, got any tips for a place to crash?
Note: Saw your above post from 2009. At least 40 bucks for el cheapo eh. Oh well, travel is rarely easy.
My flight is in a week. So, whatever. |

I got away to Macau/HK for a week when teaching in Korea and absolutely loved it. It's been a year so I don't remember the exact names but here's what I did:
Ferry from Hong Kong to Macau about an hour and the best way to get there.
Free shuttles from Macau Airport to any Casino. I gambled at the Grand Lisboa casino in the central location and thought it was great for many reasons:
1. They have a pokerstars branded poker room and texas hold 'em is all I play -- good fun action. AYAHHH!
2. The upstairs restaurant above the poker room served the best chinese food I've had in my life, hands down.
3. the bar on the floor below the poker room had awesome pub food and a great view of the stage performances they put on regularly during the day.
4. because of the central location you can easily stroll into the old portugeuse quarter and see some of the historical sites and museum.
5. Close to the Wynn, and the shuttle stop to the southern strip casinos
With that said I chose to be a cheap ass and not stay there, so I ventured into the side street around the portugeuse quarter where there are some truly unique establishments -- if you're adventurous. MANY of these places are outright brothels to this day, but the midrange places will just rent a room or two to an escort. You can find something nice there for about $50 a night, but you might just want to plan in advance and snag something at the Lisboa for around $100.
I only spent a few days in Macau before going back to Hong Kong which gave me plenty to do for a week. Check hostelworld.com for your lodging in hong kong and read Tai Pan and Noble House before going -- better yet, get the audiobook! |
