Hi all,
I am about to move to Ganghwa-do and just wanted to find out from teachers living there what they think of the location. Also if anyone knows of any decent size apartments in a decent part of the island. |

I don't live there, but it is my favorite place in Korea to visit and I go there several times a year. The main town on the island, Ganghwa-eup, is located at the NE part of the island, and is the most active area, business-wise. The SE part is also busy due to the historic fortress areas, but it, like most of the rest of the island, is rather rural. There are two bridges to the mainland (one in the NE and one in the SE); anytime, other than Sunday late afternoon/evening, they provide a quick connection to metropolitan areas. The very northern part of the island is usually off-limits to all except local citizenry and military, as it is a stone's throw from NK.
Good luck with your move there! |

I live near-ish to Ganghwa-do (in northern Incheon) and I have seen buses that go from Ganghwa-do to Seoul. Not sure how long it takes, but it is possible to take a direct bus between the two locations. |

Yeah, I took a bus out there this summer with the better half. Some quick buses and some not so quick ones as well.
Beautiful place. |

It's pretty isolated.....town is VERY small.
Despite being near seoul, the commute sucks unless you have a car. It will take 1-2 hours to get to Seoul. The one bus from seoul only leaves from hongdae. There are no other public transports to the island from Seoul.
Next nearest city is gimpo which is practically in seoul anyway.
Basically, if you can't find it in gangwha(most likely) prepare to spend half the day traveling to seoul for everything. Zero nightlife other than drinking in a hoff with Korean soldiers mostly.
Gmarket and online shopping will be your best friend.
Apartmets are super cheap....your place will be very large(and old).[/b] |

Actually, you can catch bus (No. 3000) from Seoul back to Ganghwa in many places, not just Hongdae. You can catch the bus back to Ganghwa near Ewha University, Sinchon (near Hyundai Dept Store), Hongdae, Hapjeong and all the way up to Songjeong Station (line no. 5) near Gimpo Airport.
If traffic is good, it will take about 80-90 minutes from Ganghwa Bus Terminal to Hapjeong Station (line No 2) in Seoul.
Gimpo is the nearest big city and takes about 60 minutes by bus from Ganghwa Bus Terminal. It's another 30 minutes to the Hapjeong Station.
My apartment wasn't that big, but it was a newer building built within the last 5 years. |
