I knew a korean guy who did that in the 90s. He said the amount of hate he got from K women was insane until 2000s. They'd call out his wife in public and curse her out
He assumed it was much more easy for a girl to marry a foreigner becuase there is a history of such pairings.
In contrast, K women are unfamiliar with it and don't know how to respond to the prospect of a white women with a K-dude.
He said he actually hid the fact from most jobs that he had a foreigner wife. |

I think I've seen more unicorns than this hypothetical pairing. |

Yep, I'm not sure why people mention this pairing.
I've been here several years and I've just not seen it. |

What bugs me a bit is when people constantly refer to my girlfriend/wife as my KOREAN wife/girlfriend as though I have more than one.
Ex. Will you come to dinner with your Korean girlfriend? Do you have a plan with your Korean girlfriend this weekend?
In every place I've worked there are always a couple of people who do this. Minor annoyance, but still...a bit weird. |

I think you guys need to get over yourselves. It is just a natural interest. I am interested when I learn about my buddies new girlfriend in Korea I am naturally interested to know whether it is a Korean or foreigner.
By complaining about Koreans asking about this you are really also pointing the finger at yourself. But in actuality there is no problem with either - there is a high chance it could be either so that is why someone asks the question in the first place. |

Its not a positive history though. Bad connotations.
A prostitution industry grew up firstly to service the Japanese occupiers, then to serve US troops. So naturally any K-woman associating with a foreigner was assumed to be a prostitute.
In the poverty-stricken 50's many Korean women who had lost fathers husbands prostituted themselves to americans in order to make ends meet. In fact any attractive woman naturally sold herself as a means to survive. Any foreigner was richer than the average Korean at that time. Waygooks were walking cash machines. Daughters were trained into the business and sent out by their own parents. Seoul resembled Pattaya to a certain degree. Desperate times back then.

Sorta true.
When me and my wife, then gf, were walking around town, a young couple said in Korean "look at the Korean prostitute" just bc she was with me. |

| It's becoming more and more common, and tends to be a good talking point if you don't take it personally. I find that it tends to be viewed as a positive by most of the people who ask. This is especially true if your wife is attractive! |
I don't know, I told some of my younger kids that I'm married, and even they ask me if she's Korean, and when I say of course, some will get a disgusted look on their face.
Obviously I have to question some of the things they are learning at home about interracial dating/marrying.
I have an adult class too, and when I tell some of the older men, I can see the brief let down in their face.
I'm pretty attuned to these kinds of things and can read people pretty well. I always could. |
Why do you say "of course"? |
Because they KNOW I've been dating a Korean girl every since I've been teaching them for two years..
I mean what do they think--I dropped my gf of two years in the middle of night and shacked up with another woman that I married shortly thereafter?
...I wouldn't put it past em... |
Who's to say that they knew for sure?
Relationships change. As the previous poster said, I dumped my ex, and within a few months was married to someone better.
I only called attention to the "of course" because it seemed as though you were saying "of course" because you would only date Korean women. I interpreted what you said incorrectly, and for that, I apologize. |

Students from all over the world are curious about whether their teacher is married or not. I have taught in the UK and at an international School in the Middle East. At every school i have worked at, the students ask you if you have a girlfriend/are married. It's no big deal....they are curious.
For adults who ask you if you have a girlfriend, well it's a natural question. My co-workers (non Korean) have asked me this question, and so have friends (Korean and non Korean). Some people ask this question, others don't.
Who cares? If its a friend or male co-worker well then we can discuss what we like in girls. Some Koreans have been curious as to why Westerners find Korean girls attractive. Likewise, i have been asked by an American female, why i find Korean girls attractive.
I could not care less about their Nationality, it's the person that counts. Naturally since 99.9% of the girls here are Korean, then the chances are that unless you find Asians unattractive, you will hook up with one.
If you think the person asking you if you have a Korean girlfriend is a racist, then why are you talking with them. If you are embarrassed that you have a Korean girlfriend and don't want to tell anyone, well that's on you. If someone you have just met asks you (Korean) well maybe they are just trying to start a conversation with you.
I was once asked how much i earn by my Korean girlfriends father. His English was very limited. Did i take this as i sign that he was 'seeing if i was worthy of his daughter'? No....i took the positive line and thought he is being polite to me and trying to talk with me....and this is a simple question that he can ask in English.
The moral of the story. Who cares if someone asks you if your girlfriend is Korean? |

The OP is whingeing over something really inane. Who cares if they ask you if your girlfriend is Korean. It can be a way for people to connect. Some are happy if you have a Korean girlfriend or wife because you connect to them to some extent. I am not sure exactly, but I can't see why that's such a big deal for the OP. |

Actually, the statistics of 2009 (sorry, can't give the link) was that out of 100,000 mixed marriages of that year about 90% was of a Korean male marrying a foreign women of varying ethnicity's.
So, the vast majority of

If you are just talking about western men dating Korean women and vice versa in comparison, then you may have a point. Just choose you wording a bit clearer next time. |

I'm aware of this, but you know what I'm talking about. White guy with Korean girl is much more visable than Korean guy with Vietnamese/Chinese/Filipino girl. |
