If the boiler in my apartment breaks, am I liable to pay for it?
It seems ridiculous that I'm expected to pay for a boiler which routinely breaks down, when it isn't actually my fault. I have done nothing to make the damn thing break.
The landlord has told my co-teacher that he's getting a repair guy in to look at it and if it's deemed 'old' then I don't have to pay, but if it's 'new' then apparently I'll be paying for it! Seems really shady to me. Plus I don't want to have to use half or more of my paycheck on a boiler. I work at a public school which up until now has been great but it seems to me like the landlord is just trying to pass the bill off on to me, instead of paying for it himself. Grrrr.
Has anyone else had to pay for a new boiler or repairs? |

If you did something to it, then pay. If not, don't pay. Just be honest. |

Did you use the boiler? Simple question.
If yes, then you did do something to make it break.
If no, then you didn't do something to make it break.
You should negotiate with your landlord. My boiler leaked and it cost 20,000w to fix. The landlord just went ahead and paid for it. |

Actually if you don't use the boiler than some pipes can be frozen and crack. Than it is your fault because you didn't run it at least on a minimal level.
Any other cases you don't need to pay a single penny! The landlord should get it fixed.

When my washer stopped working, I got the manager, who called in a repair guy. My husband must have left some change in his pocket, because a coin had gotten lodged in the pump, so that had to be replaced. I believe it was 50k (give or take 20k) which we paid, because that was our fault.
Boilers are different, though. Mine broke and I showed the building manager. Someone came in that day and installed a new one. I didn't have to pay. |

The boiler is the landlord's responsibility unless the tenant messed it up. |
