A 33-year-old man who struck customers with light sabers at the Toys R Us at Hayden Island has been sentenced to 45 days jail and possible mental-health treatment.
David Allen Canterbury told Judge Kenneth Walker that he is already seeking mental-health treatment. Canterbury also apologized to his victims.
Portland police said Canterbury swung the Star Wars sabers one in each hand at three customers on Dec. 14 at about 9:50 p.m. at the store at 1800 Jantzen Beach Center. He then carried the light sabers outside the store and swung at police. Officers tried to use a Taser to subdue him, but Canterbury successfully deflected one of the wires away.
Police eventually wrestled him to the ground before taking him into custody.
Today in Multnomah County Circuit Court, Canterbury pleaded no contest to fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest. The judge dismissed charges of interfering with a police officer, theft and disorderly conduct. The judge also sentenced Canterbury to two years of probation and a mental-health evaluation that could call for treatment.
Canterbury has been banned from Toys R Us.

He should have gone with the Jedi mind trick instead.

The force was stronger in this one:
--------------------------------------------
A man who dressed up as Darth Vader, wearing a garbage bag for a cape, and assaulted the founders of a group calling itself the Jedi church was given a suspended sentence Tuesday.
Arwel Wynne Hughes, 27, attacked Jedi church founder Barney Jones -- aka Master Jonba Hehol -- with a metal crutch, hitting him on the head, prosecutors told Holyhead Magistrates' Court.
He also whacked Jones' 18-year-old cousin, Michael Jones -- known as Master Mormi Hehol -- bruising his thigh in the March 25 incident, prosecutors said.
The two cousins and Barney Jones' brother, Daniel, set up the Church of Jediism, Anglesey order, last year. Jedi is the faith followed by some of the central characters in the "Star Wars" films.
The group, which claims about 30 members, says on its Web site that it uses "insight and knowledge" from the films as "a guide to living a better and more worthwhile life."
"We all love the films and what they stand for. Obviously some people are going to laugh about it," the Wales on Sunday newspaper quoted Barney Jones as saying last month. "But a lot of people do take it seriously."
Unfortunately for Hughes, his March attack was recorded on a video camera that the cousins had set up to film themselves in a light saber battle.
"Darth Vader! Jedis!" Hughes shouted as he approached.
Hughes claimed he couldn't remember the incident, having drunk the better part of a 2 1/2-gallon (10-liter) box of wine beforehand.
"He knows his behavior was wrong and didn't want it to happen but he has no recollection of it," said Hughes' lawyer, Frances Jones.
District Judge Andrew Shaw sentenced Hughes to two months in jail but suspended the sentence for one year. He also ordered Hughes to pay $195 to each of his victims and $117 in court costs.
In the 2001 United Kingdom census, 390,000 -- 0.7 percent of the population -- listed Jedi as their religion. |

I'm glad the sentence was fairly light because that's hilarious. Mr. Vader probably thought he had the idea of a lifetime when he crashed their party totally blitzed.
"Yeah! I'm gonna run in there and rock out with the nerds! I am your father! Let's have a Jedi war! *hic*" |

The whole put 'Jedi' as your religion on the census forms was a joke:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedi_census_phenomenon
When Tarkin said to Vader "You're all that's left of that religion" it was displaying the general ignorance of Jedi and the Force.
The Jedi are not a religious order. They have a strong spiritual connection to the force that binds all things in the universe together. They also have laser swords. But that doesn't make them a religion.
Do any of these guys have laser swords and freaky mind powers? Have any of them seen action in an interstellar conflict? Levitated a spaceship with their mind? Not real Jedi in my book. |

This cracked me up. Vader drinks like a wookie. I wonder if he went with Rydonnian spicewine, Daruvvian champagne, or another one of the several dozen varieties that apparently exist in the Star Wars universe.
