I left my school because (...well, for a few reasons, but ultimately) my school lost its funding from the provincial office and GEPIK had been all but cut entirely.

As I understand it now, the only schools (in Gyeonggi-do) that still hire foreign teachers are those that have funding from the cities (and are/were not dependent on funding from the provincial office of education).

In short, you're applying for a program that has been virtually obliterated. Being picky about being near Seoul isn't helping your cause. And besides, Gyeonggi is the province that surrounds Seoul. Compared to EPIK, anywhere you're placed will be relatively close to Seoul.

I was just about to say the same thing. In my area there is about 30 NETs i think this time next year there will be less than 10. Im sorry OP but i dont think you can be too picky. But who knows maybe you well get what you are looking for.

Hi guys, thanks for all of your responses!

I decided to use multiple recruiters, but I honestly don't think I'll have much luck. Basically, my recruiters told me that they're willing to help, but that I shouldn't expect any offers soon because the market is so damn competitive. Add the fact that I'm a freaking gyopo. Laughing

Looks like I'll be heading the hagwon route. And before you ask, yes, I've looked for jobs geared towards bilingual Korean Americans, but the thing I need most is housing. So I'm pretty much stuck with going the normal noob route.

I don't think GEPIK knows what will happen in 3 months let alone a year. But once they do find out they won't share it with any of the actual foreign teachers.

Hey I was wondering if you could give an update as to what happened? I'm planning to apply to GEPIK too with multiple recruiters.

Haha. This thread is really old, and I'm embarrassed by how stupid I sound here. Razz

Well, I filled out the official GEPIK application form and sent it to ATC Recruiting. You're only supposed to fill out one of those.

I worked with ATC and Korvia to look for GEPIK schools, and I finally got a job offer. Laughing

So yeah, just fill out one application form and work with multiple recruiters. There's Korvia, ATC, GMSC, JIK, WorkNPlay, JJ, etc.

Hope this helps!

I got my job through Korvia by the way. The best GEPIK recruiter IMO.

Ok, great, thanks! i REEEEEEALLY want to use Korvia, but when I emailed and asked about GEPIK they lied to me about some things and deterred me from GEPIK and tried to convince me to go with EPIK. I think because, at the time, it was EPIK's hiring season so they wanted to rope me in. I don't want to apply to EPIK though. So right off the bat, they were dishonest. That being said, I'm going to use multiple recruiters (the ones you mentioned) and Korvia too, just to have a larger job pool to work with. If I HAD to pick ONLY one, I wouldn't pick Korvia since they were dishonest.

I apologize in advance for this question because I know people hate it: but how difficult was it for you to get a job? I know this was a few years ago and things has changed, but I was wondering...
I'm asking because I'm teeter-tottering between applying to EPIK/SMOE and GEPIK or just GEPIK. (Location near Seoul/Gyeonggi do is important to me, unfortunately)

Yeah, when I first contacted Korvia, they wanted me to go on the EPIK route even though I insisted I wanted to do GEPIK as well.

If I were you and wanted a Fall start, I'd apply to EPIK directly and list my only preference as Seoul on the application. This is suggested on one of EPIK's direction forms. I did that and got accepted, but I was wait-listed because of late docs. I was gonna list Incheon as my second choice, but I didn't because they can also place you on an island called Ganghwado.

You can also apply directly to SMOE and bypass using EPIK. http://etis.sen.go.kr/custom/custom.do?dcpNo=12644 <- They only accept about 20 positions or so. You can also apply to SMOE using Korea Connections, but they only recruit for SMOE if they need to fill up some leftover spots.

Contact Korvia (they have the most GEPIK positions) and the other recruiters and tell them that you're only interested in GEPIK. Also note that it's not unusual for a lot of GEPIK schools to post openings only a month or two before they start. So if your docs are ready, it's not too late to apply now!

I filled out my GEPIK application in mid-November and I only got around 3 or 4 schools that were interested in me. Confused They were all pretty far from Seoul too, so I had to pass. Then I got an email from Korvia saying that they had a school really close to Seoul that was looking for a Gyopo teacher a week ago. I had my interview on the 30th and got accepted 2 days later. Very Happy

I was pretty nervous because my recruiter told me that I had competition, and my interviewer was also my prospective co-teacher. The co-teacher even told me that they wanted someone with experience... But I got the job somehow. lol I tried my best to look and sound really happy, positive, eager, and passionate. Guess it worked. :p

Hope this helps. Very Happy

Thanks. Laughing I'm heading to Bundang. My recruiter asked me if I was OK with it since she knew I wanted to be in Seoul. I'm more than OK with it... It's freaking Bundang. Haha. Where are you headed btw? I'm just glad I don't need to stress out too much about job hunting anymore.

Nice man. Bundang is the shit.

I took up a position in Bucheon. Try to get in contact with the current NET at the school. I've been emailing back and forth with mine with questions, and it's like Christmas every time I get a reply back. I get all the answers I've had in my mind about specific information regarding the school, co-teachers, provided apartment, etc. It makes me feel way more prepared for heading over there.

Thanks for all the information again. I was going to apply direct to EPIK, but I think I'm only going to apply to GEPIK... getting duplicates of all the required documents are expensive and I feel like I won't get into EPIK (my last day of university classes end in April and my convocation is in June so my complete transcript and degree won't arrive until June.) I think I will start contacting recruiters about GEPIK jobs at the end of May for a job for Fall, is that a good time? Or is that too early? GEPIK started hiring for this March last December, which seems really late.

Yeah I wish now that I would've just gone with GEPIK when I started this whole process. But my recruiter kept telling me at the time that GEPIK was too risky because of the hiring situation. But all together to double apply to EPIK and GEPIK, it cost me well over 500 bucks. 200 of that just being to fedex the set of documents to Korea for EPIK and then for GEPIK.

Oh did you apply to both? Yeah, the high cost of getting double of everything was just too much, and I was not confident that I could get into Seoul even if I applied early because of the budget problem.

And I don't think its necessary to send documents on rush delivery for GEPIK as it is for EPIK because for EPIK the sooner your documents arrive the faster you get your placement but with GEPIK you will already know your placement. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Umm...I doubt thats what they were doing. They were likely playing the odds.

Just GEPIK?? None of what Ive said is really sinking in yet, is it?

[EDIT]: But...if pikadoopoo and overdrive got in, can't hurt to try. But those are long odds. Best of luck.

What do you suggest he do? Apply to both GEPIK and EPIK or just avoid GEPIK and apply to only EPIK?
