| I'm having the same problem, except it's just the pipes to my washing machine that are frozen (my washer sits on my currently freezing cold balcony). My washer won't start as a result, and my laundry is piling up. Help! |

A space heater can be your best friend!
Just point it at the pipes and wait.
As for the frozen washer pipes: Disconnect the drain hose and bring it inside to get all of the ice out of it. Then fill your washer with super hot water...heating it on the stove if you have to! Then run the cycle with (whites, no wool!) or without clothes.
That should fix it!
Or take your stuff to the nearest dry cleaner (they also wash/dry stuff for a reasonable price) and wait til spring! |

It's not the drain pipe that's the problem, it's the hoses that supply the water to the washer that are frozen. My washer can't get water from the hoses, so it refuses to start.
What's a dry cleaner's shop called in Korean? |

In country with such cold winters one would expect the locals to adapt to these circumstances well over the past few thousand years. Winters a few decades ago were even colder and longer. But no!!!
So you are saying you let the water ran a little? If you didn't than it's considered your fault. If you did and the pipe still froze than it's the landlord's problem. Although it's hard to provide evidence that the water was running.
You will either need to wait untill it melts (that can be several days or perhaps weeks) or call someone who will melt it with steam. That service is not cheap.
contact you landlord or your boss and figure out the next step. |

My pipes were frozen yesterday morning.. I was spewin! My landlady pretty basically said bad luck and hung up. so I found any exposed water pipes (insulated) and I pointed a heater directly towards it, figuring if it was frozen or not the extra heat could only be helpful.
Next, I thought perhaps the ondol pipes, which were working, may run parallel to the frozen water pipes (ondol was still working) so I pumped up the ondol to max, and about 90 minutes later running water!
I don't know whether or not it was the heater being pointed as some random pipes or the ondol being turned up (I think the latter), but not I have water again!
세탁소 setakso is laundromat in Korean, although really you must work past half a dozen every day, no? |
