Man it's cold. How cold is acceptable for a workplace? This is ridiculous. In the cafeteria at my school, the heater is on full but the temp reads 12.
This cheapness with heat doesn't match with how rich the country is. Do they think it is like this in developed countries? |

I bought a space heater for under my desk. My primary CT told me it is frowned upon but the teachers do it anyway.
This is another perk for whoever replaces me in March - if they do... |

When you say "developed countries" do you mean the US where we only make up 5% of the world's population but consume over 20% of the world's energy? Or Canada which is even worse than the US per capita in terms of energy consumption. Or do you mean developed nations like Russia and other eastern european countries which are the most wasteful in terms of dollars spent and energy used?
These are the models we should try to follow instead of putting on an extra sweater or a pair of long underwear? |

Yes, students wearing a parka and gloves in class is true sign of an enlightened nation...
Last year when I began, the school was freezing. They didn't turn on the heater at all for the class. This year, they have, and it is a much better learning environment.
And speaking of energy efficiency, teachers hugging space heaters isn't terribly Green... |

| Try this. Go to the administration/accounting office. That's usually where the master air-con/heating control panel is. Tell them you want the heater turned on in your office. I've donee that every day this winter break and it works like a charm. |

I've never had a problem asking administration to turn heat on during the winter for my camps or AC during the summer. And yes, sitting next to a space heater in one office is much more green than heating an entire wing of a building that is mostly going unused during vacation.
I've worked at multiple elementary schools in the US. Most did not have air conditionding. I guess we aren't "enlightened" either....  |

my school hardly ever turns on the heater/ac...
the only time they turn it on is during winter camp/summer camp  |

What doesn't make sense at my hagwon is that they put the heat on full blast, and then open all the windows because the stench is unbearable. It's a constant battle between hot and cold. |

| They leave the windows open. I'm all for fresh air, but Im more for being warm. Also, I think I remember hearing something about a problem with maybe carbon monoxide poisoning in schools before they had central heat and a/c. All the old people just probably feel safer with a window open. If its winter and you are at a public school, chances are you are almost the only one there and they dont really care about you. If you go down to the admin office they have their own little sauna going, probably slamming soju as well. |

In a country that has to import almost all of their fuel, it makes more sense to invest in some insulation  |

| The heating has been on in this office all day yet it's still cold to sit in, even with a coat on. Furthermore, there is no coffee. None. I'm just about to drink a cup of hot water, and weep. |

Bingo.
Our office and classrooms were freezing and half the staff would be in beanies and parkas and coughing from fighting colds. We got the response: "Oh, small budgets, we have to save energy."
Meanwhile the Admin office was toasty hot and they got two grocery bags of snacks per day. It's not about the size of the budget, it's how they choose to use it.
Admin saves a few won on heating and blows millions on other useless junk for themselves.
Insulation would work wonders if they really want to save money. |
