I think this whole thing about Kpop being popular outside of Korea is being blown out of proportion. Especially in the Korean media. My students have this warped sense of how well Kpop is accepted in the world. They think GG is selling more albums than Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber. It's made them very cocky too. They constantly bring up that story about the British girl that had surgery on her tongue so she could learn Hangul. They attribute that to Kpop and think westerners everywhere are doing this because of Kpop. It's also cranked the Korean nationalism up to 11. Some students asked me if I like the 'Boys' single. I happen to really like GG, but don't care for their new song. When I said 'No', they replied 'If you hate Korea so much, why don't you go back home'. If westerners like or dislike GG, it's because of the quality of the music, not because they're Korean. These people obviously can't separate Kpop's success and national identity.
This article sums it up nicely: http://www.cnngo.com/seoul/life/tell-me-about-it/k-pop-taking-over-world-dont-make-me-laugh--476482 |

Wow. Did you read the comments left on the article you linked?
I thought youtube.com had the most asinine user comments on the internet. Lo, a new contender has emerged. |

From Wikipedia:
"According to Tiffany: "I feel like we eat at least 3,000 kcal a day. Our manager told us, The amount of money SNSD spends on food is much greater than the amount Super Junior spends on their meals." |

I'm sure they did their best as they had a lot riding on the performance, but, as a fan of KPop, I basically couldn't get into it and was almost embarrased for them. They're almost like a circus sideshow.
KPop will never fly in America with it's diversified listening public. It's all cutesy vocals with bubblegum beats and dance moves.
Listening to the Wonder Grls sing the U.S. national anthem last year made me cringe as well. |
Yeah thats right...
Groups likes the backtreet boys, new kids on the block bombed, never made it with cutsie boy band looks and lame lyrics with dance moves!
Britney Spears she bombed too, never made it in the US.
I fact the US IS a diversified market that consumes it all, including lame cheesy bubblegum pop with cheap dance moves.....
As for the Generation Girls, no idea how they will do. I predict limited success based on what I heard of their music.
They do however seem to be doing rather well in Asia which should be their main market target. |

I still think SM or Korean producers have a better chance if they just
bring their franchise model(which they ripped off) to the states, recruit 5 pretty AMerican girls, dress them up and market the hell out of them all over the media, give them some catchy tunes and then go for gold..
but the girls need to be white or black, or mixed.. sorry that's just the way it is.. they gots to be Americans.. it's the only way really.. IMO for a real shot at success. |

I agree.
KPop should stick to KPop and let people come to it. That's what makes it attractive. Korean lyrics, Korean members.
Franchise it out to an American assembled group. |

You don't get why they put English lyrics in K-pop do you? A huge part of it is to make the singers appear more international in the eyes of the local fans. So, you can imagine that releasing an album of English songs in the US is the ultimate sign of success, regardless of whether it bombs or not. |

Perhaps a better indicator of how they are likely to fare: the autograph signing.

They're all looking down like they just want to get out of there. No rapport with the fans, too aloof. They have that very korean standoffishness towards outsiders.
Its gonna take more than immaculate choreographed dance routines. They will need to make a genuine connection with foreign people.
There is very little in the korean upbringing or attitude that could have prepared them for such a thing. |

There's so much personality and ego injected into US pop stars that they're in many cases a living brand.
Take Kanye West for example. How many adjectives can you think of off the top your head that describe him? Cocky, snarky, fashionable, talented, egocentric...
Now take any major Korean pop star...say IU off the stage and give me ONE adjective BESIDES "cute" to describe her.
On stage the Kpop stars are impressive, but off script they just fall totally flat. |

I think they chose a bad song to go international with. The boys is probably the least catchy of Gee, Oh, and even Mr.Taxi (which I hate).
Kind of reminds me of the mistake they made with trying to make BOA an "international hit". har har har.
I love kpop and all but they really don't understand the US market.... Not that anyone really understands the US music market when you have Justin Beiber front lining but honestly, korean pop cannot take off without a REAL catchy song to reel people in. |

No, I get it.
What I'm saying is you can put that bit of English in, but what's appealing about KPop to people overseas is that it is something different and foreign. So yes, put a bit of English in it, but keep it Korean.
Picture Tejano music. I listen to it precisely because it is in Spanish and I can only understand about 10% of it, and the music is pretty cheesy, but there is something...just something...so....Mexican about it that it becomes enjoyable. |
