Hi!
I'm about to get my FBI background check in the mail (if USPS is to be believed), and I called my state's (Georgia) office to ask about getting it apostilled. I was told that if the background check is sealed, I had to get it apostilled in Maryland. Is this true?
I had gathered from the forums that my local state can do it, and I have a friend from California who got it done with his State Department. Said friend is now teaching in Korea. Is it different for every state?
Additional info: My contract starts March 1st, so I honestly don't have the time to wait for an apostille from Maryland. I also wonder if Georgia has no authority to apostille a federal background check, or if they can and just don't.
Any information would be very much appreciated. |

Thanks for the link, but I couldn't find any information regarding Georgia. Granted, I haven't read through the 15-page thread and this forum's search function doesn't seem to work at all. But the 1st page and the next five pages definitely do not mention Georgia.
So, if anyone has any information, experience, I'd be really grateful.
I was thinking maybe I could call again today and ask if they'd apostille it if I got it notarized first, which some people in that other thread seem to have done, but still, the info's a bit old, so anything current would be better. |

Sorry I didn't mean to infer that it contained info about Georgia, just that it answered the state vs federal apostille question.
I would listen to what your secretary of state said. Like I mentioned, some states do not apostille federal documents while some do. So if you called your state and they said they can't then they can't. You can always use a courier service to get a federal apostille on it and have it back in a week. |

Hey,
While I've heard that a few states still do apostille federal documents I believe the best thing to do is send it to the U.S. Department of State. I'm from Michigan and I ordered my FBI background check about a month ago. A short letter was also enclosed with the background check and it stated that in order to get an apostille on the FBI background check, which is a federal document, you had to send it to the Department of State. I used rushdocs.com and got it back in about a week. Maybe Georgia is different, but I wouldn't count on it. Good luck with whatever you decide. |
