I've got a B.A. in linguistics, M.A. in applied linguistics, and over seven years experience teaching all ages (though I've never taught adults in a university setting, just hagwon and non-profit settings). I got stuck with a lame job this year because I came in mid-September when the good jobs were already taken, but I am determined NOT to let that happen again this Fall.
So my question is, how do people find out about the good university jobs? I know the usual suspects (Dave's, Craigslist, Worknplay, etc.), but Dave's is the only one where I consistently see decent university jobs posted, and I've heard the Chronicle of Higher Education's website is good, but it's the wrong season to be looking there now.
Are there other places I can look? I know it's going to be a few months before they start posting the fall jobs, but I want to be ready. I am actually aiming more towards TESOL teacher training than straight English teaching, but I would be very, very happy with just a university job teaching basic English courses if that's what I need to do to pay my dues. Any input would be greatly appreciated. |

It's getting very difficult. At least your major looks good.
Unfortunately, you're too late, unless you pick up a spot that someone cancels on.
Scan the ads here and elsewhere for jobs. Apply everywhere you'd consider working for. Good luck. |

I know I'm too late for this March, but like I said, I'm looking forward to September.
What I'm looking for is sites to visit to find jobs, or other ways to find out which jobs are available. |

I've been printing every uni ad that comes out here and I keep a folder (I've been doing it for a year and a half). I also check higheredjobs.com but those don't often have new jobs on it that fit my qualifications.
Don't forget to check craigslist, I've seen a few jobs pop up there too. |

I'd say something like 95% of the people hired at my uni are hired for the March start. Unless someone leaves unexpectedly they generally hire everyone at the same time. Universities seem to be a hell of a bureaucracy here. So I understand why they try to hire everyone at the same time. I actually got hired 'off season' to replace a teacher that was leaving in a hurry and it was a pain getting the paperwork and the signatures from all the higher ups who are usually on some outing somewhere. Your best bet would be to look for a 6 month contract that would line you up with the hiring schedule and maybe make it a job that teaches older students. Honestly though, if you work at a lower tier uni, the English level of the students will probably be on par with a 3rd grader. The maturity level isnt far off either. Good luck! |
