No personal experience however my friend from back home tried it and ended up wasting hours teaching for free just to gain a high enough rating.

High enough rating? Sounds like a video game.

I did a year with Talkbean - http://tutor.talkbean.com - always paid in full and on time. No complaints really.

Some of them are fly by night or have strange payment schemes. One that a friend of mine worked for based out of Taiwan had a base hourly rate which increased with good ratings and decreased with poor ratings. Doesn't sound ideal to me...

That industry is really hit & miss!

You have some great companies out there that are organized and you have yahoos who set up a website and hire anyone....

As usual you need to do your homework.

I know there is a company in the US that hires certified US Teachers to teach online in Korean Public Schools. They pay pretty well but ask for professionals. I attended one such class in Seoul last time I was in Korea (the K-teacher there knows our family and wanted an observer) and it was an eye opener. The class was dynamic, kids got into it big time and it was really interesting experience. The pedagogy is different and such classes need a lot of planning as well as some pre-class prepping of the students by the teacher.

Tutoring sites mean you will teacn 1-on-1 and that can be really hit & miss!

Bascially my advice on this would be as follows:

If you want to do this and succeed, read up on online teaching methods, prepare yourself well before you teach and take lots of notes on your first lessons to improve them. Online teaching is a different beast than in class teaching. The approach differs, how you communicate with students differ and how you pass on knowledge differs.

I would be interested in a link. Our school has a conference class but it is very poor quality so if they ever look to upgrade it would be good to have a name to give them.

Here is the link: http://www.eleutian.com/

I am pretty sure it is the company that provided the online teacher for that particular school. I can check further if you guys want, will just need to send a message to that Korean teacher.

I don't know for sure, but I haven't heard otherwise. The "Tutor of the Month" on their homepage is for January 2012.

I guess you never know though.
